Pete Rose and the Baseball Hall of Fame?
Pete Rose was one of the greatest baseball players ever. However, he had a little gambling problem. It did not affect how he played the game, unlike these guys nowadays pumped fill of steroids like Barry Bonds and Mark McGuire. So when will Pete Rose get his rightful place in the Hall of Fame? He was great by his own merit and talents, not because he was roided up.

- I don't know...wanna bet on it?
- I hate to say he never will get the chance. Hitting is so crucial and he was so good at it. He has proved his talent. If the world only knew what went on with pro athletes in their private lives, I think the hall of fame would be half the size. Roids are much more altering than gambling . There are 18 starting players in a ball game that can affect the outcome. I do believe Pete Rose should be have a rightful place in the hall.
- It's a shame that Charlie Hustle will probably never be admitted into the Hall. Look at the case of Shoeless Joe. There is credible evidence out there that he was not a willing conspirator in the Black Sox scandal, yet almost a full century later he's still not in. I absolutely agree with your comparison to Bonds and McGuire. It disgusts me to know that there are folks out there who would put them in the Hall, even though they brought shame to baseball.
- Pete Rose did the ultimate sin and he betted on baseball while managing his team. That's worse then using steroids and I hate to break it through your thick skull but there's never been any proof that Bonds took steroids, and Mark McGuire took andro which wasn't illegal at the time to help heal from plantar faschitis. So, your argument is way off base. Rose does deserve to be recognized at MLB events, but he doesn't deserve the hall of fame.
- unfortunatly, he probably wont. i think he should, he is the hit king, and a great coach. he may have vet, but for all we know, he bet on his team to win. and you cant throw a game when you want to win. while it is wrong to bet on your sport, he bet for his teams to win, and every coach and player wants to win. he shouldnt be punished, and not allowed in the the HOF
- you are 1,000% right, its stinks that he hasn't been inducted, its amazing u got these football players killing dogs, one was on trial for murder..and the freakin list goes on...he acheived his ratings by sheer will power, hard work and talent and excellence and should be rewarded not punished. i do not think they will ever give him his just deserts...then they would be admitting they were wrong in the first place.. WHICH THEY WERE AND ''ARE''
- i agree that pete should be in the hall, but he did break one of the most sacred rules of baseball by betting on games...i think pete should get in based on his carreer on the field , but because he accepted a life time ban from baseball, he never will....as for the roids thing....players have always tried to get an edge, and since they broke no rules of baseball, they should have every chance to get in as any other "clean" player
- He should. What he did as a coach has nothing to do with what he did on the field. I mean, banning him from the game is one thing but punishing him as a player too is ridiculous in my opinion. I don't care what the opponents say one has nothing to do with the other.
- He'll get in right after Joe Jackson does
- I agree that Pete Rose should already be in the Hall of Fame. The Hall is for those whose ability to play the game stood out above everyone elses in there time. McGwire has already been on the ballot a couple of times and he admitted to using andro..whatever before it was banned by MLB. Bonds will probably be on the ballot as well. These guys cheated at the game blatantly and Rose only gambled on it. It is even in the Bible that some good can come from gambling (tried to find the verse but can't right at this moment). He may never get his place in the Hall, be we all know he should be there based on what we have seen in recent years. Besides, if you can bite someone's ear off and want to "eat his children" (Mike Tyson) and still be in that sport again, I don't see anything wrong with gambling on it.
- pete rose is one of the best in baseball and should be in the hall of fame.
- I agree with you about one thing. Steroids and PEDs use should be an automatic and permanent out for players. The Players Association -- those multi-millionaires -- would never go for it. The owners -- those multi-billionaires -- have already blown the issue, so we have to live with it. You're right, though, it's worse than gambling and should be one of two things that get you kicked out of baseball. Now, every A level ballplayer, every AA level ballplayer, every AAA level ballplayer, and every MLB ballplayer knows that there is just one -- ONE -- restriction on playing ball. You can't bet on the game. ONE thing and one thing only. And as a manager -- the person most likely to affect the outcome of the game -- Rose bet on the game. That's not a little gambling problem. That's a big one. How big? Well, it's the biggest rule in the entire game. And Rose did it. So, he as much as said, "You know, the Hall of Fame ain't so great. I don't care if I get in or not." So he'll NEVER get in. Just ONE thing. . .and he blew it. I'm with you 100%. Let's push for PEDs to be number 2. Dumb multi-millionaire jocks can handle a list of 2. I've seen them do it. But PEDs aren't on the list right now. Until they are there's only ONE thing. . .
- The Hall doesn't want him. Rose himself has done nothing to warrant reinstatement. Rose fans who really care about him should start (right NOW!) dragging him to GA meetings and trying to get him to reform his life and rehabilitate his behavior, because (a) what he's doing now isn't going to earn him reinstatement so it's high time to try something different and (b) he's not getting younger. If fans care this much about Rose, they really need to start making direct, beneficial interventions with him. Standing around and whining how Rose deserves more is futile; go forth and help him EARN more. Don't make the popular mistake that the reaper will change matters. Rose's inevitable death (which will make us sad) only closes the door on his chances to show real, material change. His suspension is PERMANENT, not "lifetime", so Rose's drawing breath makes no difference. And being dead hasn't helped Jackson in the least.
- Pete Rose Has Every Right to be in the fame he did not Ruin the game He just bet on his own team! big deal he did not take steroids, he did not cheat, sure! he was a little hyped up at times but he deserves more then alot of peole allready in the HOF
- 1. Rose admitted to betting on games involving his own team. 2. Rose accepted a permanent ban from the game. 3. Players who are on the permanently ineligible list are not eligible to be inducted into the hall. Pete Rose already has his rightful place in the Hall of Fame, alongside Shoeless Joe Jackson. That place is on the outside of it. I'm sorry, but a little gambling problem? That's like saying that Babe Ruth occasionally had a little too much to eat. This was not a man who lost a few bucks playing blackjack, or had a few of his buddies over once a month to play poker, or participated in an NCAA basketball pool. He was a habitual gambler. And the gambling is not what got him into trouble - it was the fact that he was so incredible stupid that he bet onb baseball. There are so many ways to gamble in America - hell there's casino gambling right near Cincinnati, there's lotteries, there's horse and dog tracks - he probably would have even been all right if he had bet illegally on football or basketball. But Rose somehow must have missed the sign every single major league clubhouse that explains exactly what will happen to a player or a manager that bets. I guess the 4500 games or so he participated in as a manger or player (not to mention times when he was in the clubhouse on off days, or they got rained out, etc.) was not enough times to have the sign in front of you. Nowhere on that sign does it say that it's okay to bet as long as you are the lifetime leader in hits, or if you did not do steroids, or if you played hard, or if you were a fan favorite. Rose knew the rules, and not only broke them, but broke them constantly. I could almost see if it was one time, but the man bet on nearly every single game. And the fact that he bet on his own team to win makes absolutely no difference. To make an exception for Rose while denying every other player who also gambled and was banned is making a mockery of the rule. And it also would be a slap in the face to every player that has actually followed that rule. At a time when the NBA is facing a huge scandal over a referee gambling, and charges that games were fixed, I don't understand how a fan of any sport, much less baseball, can possibly think that gambling on the sport you play or coach in is just a minor infraction. And I'm sorry - the fact that players took steroids (which by the way , were not against the baseball rules. Incredibly stupid, and illegal, but not in baseball.) in no way makes Rose's actions any less apprehensible. Pete Rose was a tremendous ballplayer. And certainly a true fan knows that without him being in the Hall of Fame. His name is all over the record books, and guess what? Nobody has attempted to remove his records, there are none of the fictional "asterisks" that so many fans seem to think shold be placed next to other records. Pete Rose himself must not have wanted the Hall of Fame very badly either. Depite having many opportunities to simply admit what he did, and perhaps save what little credibility he had, he kept denying the fact. That was until he needed to sell some books. Pete Rose did not "make a mistake" with his gambling. Pete Rose intentionally gambled on baseball. His biggest mistake was somehow feeling that he was above the rules. Sorry, but I hope the selfish jerk never sees Cooperstown except perhaps through a car window.
- Theres a conspiracy here. His induction is loooooooooooooooong overdue.
- I think it is bull that Pete isn't in the Hall. Yeah he bet on baseball, but like you said, his gambling didn't directly effect the way he played. He wasn't even playing baseball at the time of the scandal so he couldn't have thrown a game or anything to win his bets. I think it is shit that Barry Bonds gets to have the HR record even though he took steroids during the time he played to give him an advantage over others to break Hank's record. I also think its wrong that his 762* Home Run ball is in the Hall
