who is the outfielder who stopped the streak of Joe DiMaggio at 56?

- On July 17, 1941, pitchers Al Smith and Jim Bagby of the Cleveland Indians held him hitless. Two hard hit shots came close, but great defensive stops by third baseman Ken Keltner ended the streak. I havn't heard anything about an outfielder.
- Joltin` Joe retired looooong before he turned 56.

- No outfielder was involved. On July 17th, 1941, Joe had one last chance to extend his hitting streak, in the 9th inning, but instead, he hit a grounder to the left of Lou Boudreau, the Cleveland shortstop, but the ball hit a pebble or something in the infield which deflected the ball right to Lou who flipped the ball to second base to start a game ending double play. Boudreau was an infielder not an outfielder.
- No outfielder was involved in the ending of DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak on July 17, 1941 In the first inning, DiMaggio slashed a 1-0 pitch past third base but thirdbaseman, Ken Keltner, playing deep, backhanded the ball, fired to first for the out Second at bat, in the 4th, DiMaggio drew a walk. Third at bat, 7th inning, again he hit another hard shot to third, but picked up by Keltner and thrown out at first. Last at bat, 8th inning, 1-1 count, Joe hit a ground ball to Lou Boudreau at short. The flip to Ray Mack at second who pivoted and threw to first. Double play. The streak was over. You may be referring to famous footage of DiMaggio hitting a deep drive to left field and beind run down, then showing DiMaggio kicking the dirt coming into second base. That was Dodger outfielder Al Gionfriddo, in the 1947 World Series. http://nyenevada.blogspot.com/2008/04/al-gionfriddo-and-joe-dimaggio.html Here' a video of the highlights of that series. The catch appears about 3 minutes in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqDcNRp9gwc
