Did Ted Williams & Joe Dimaggio do anything significant in World War II?
Were the mlb players that gave up 4 yrs of their careers in the world war coddled & kept away from the battle fields? If so shouldent they have been playing ball instead?

- During world War II America wanted every well bodied man over the age of 18, there for most ball players had to sacrifice there baseball career, America didn't care if it was Dizzy Dean (pitching ace from the Cardinals, another ball player drafted) or Joe the Plumber.
- Ted Williams was one of the best bomber pilots in the service. He flew many missions, some with future President George H.W. Bush. He is a bona fide war hero. He was also the only athlete to serve in two wars as he was also a pilot in the Korean War. Williams missed 5 years due to his military service.
- Williams was primarily a flight instructor during WWII. He did not see combat action. (He did see combat action in Korea.) DiMaggio served as a physical education instructor.
- Ted Williams was a Marine Pilot but he did not see significant action during WW II. He was called up again during the Korean War and flew combat missions and was shot down once. DiMaggio was in the Army Air Corps during the war and was in the special services division. He played on an exhibition baseball team that traveled all over the world playing for the troops. Williams enlisted, DiMaggio was drafted
