How many World Series have there been all together for Major League Baseball?

I've been searching a lot of websites, but I can't find how many World Series there have been for Major League Baseball. I'd be greatful for an answer. THANKS! ... Or if you could tell me when the first World Series occurred that'd be helpful, too. All the websites I have found have been a little irrelevant so far, but I'll keep searching.

The 1904 WS was not held because the Mgr. of the NL Champs, John McGraw, HATED the President of the AL, Ban Johnson, and REFUSED to play the WS. The players strike ended the 1994 season 08/12/94. The Expos were the best team in baseball that year.
