Where did the New York yankees get their name from?

What is the history of the name what does it have to do with the state of new york ?

  1. Highlanders name changed to Yankees in 1913 and Yankees meaning Americans. Nothing in particular about new york except it is a northern state
  2. The media had also called the team the "Yankees" (a synonym for "Americans", the team being an American League franchise) for a number of years, so in 1913 the team became known exclusively as the New York Yankees.

  4. That's a good question and Sharon S is probably right. I'm not a big fan of the Yankee's but they do have a cool name.
