What is it about the New York Yankees that you hate? George Steinbrenner’s philosophy or the team?

What is it about the New York Yankees do you hate? George Steinbrenner’s philosophy or the team? George Steinbrenner purchased the Yankees in 1973 for $8.7 million dollars. Can you believe that? Being the aggressive business man that he is George wasted no time in constructing a blue print for immediate success for a team that had been terrible for years. That blue print meant going out and after any good player he could to build a winner with. He went out and he signed players like Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, Goose Gossage, Dave Winfield, and many other players of impact to put a winner on the field. During that time he changed managers 20 times in 23 years. He was never been found of rookies unless they were exceptional. Failure was not an option nor tolerated. Today the Yankees are worth over 1 billion dollars according to Forbes. George’s philosophy / blue print for putting a winner on the field has not changed. His philosophy has brought six world titles to the city of New York in 33 years. That’s a title every 5 years. My question is? Had George Steinbrenner purchased and applied this exact same philosophy / blue print to another team and had the same results, would you currently hate that team? I say this because when they were losing under the ownership of CBS no one cared. Now they are the “Evil Empire” for winning. Do you hate MLB for not setting a definitive salary cap and using the luxury tax instead? The Yankee payroll was $198,662,180. The team had to pay $26,000,000 in luxury taxes. That’s equivalent to (3) Johan Santana’s. Are you sick of them wining all the time? Beating your favorite team in the playoffs? Share your reasons for hating this team? Dear, Child or Time Traveler. I am a Yankee fan. I was expaling to those who hate them for no reason. If you don't understand what's being said it's best you go ask mommy or daddy to expain it to you, or simply don't relpy. Read it again rookie!!!

  1. George Steinbrenner's Philosophy Because He Always Wants To Be The Best. He's A Sore Loser
  2. I love the New York Yankees. Quit trying to blow smoke up peoples @SS. You know dam well that if your team was doing the same you wouldn't care one bit. You're just jealous. You're telling us that you hate George because he knew how to make his money work for him, is that it? Give me a break! The average fan doesn't care about the inner actions of sports franchises. All they care about is whether their team wins or not. The Yankees haven't won since 2000 with one pennant winner in 2003. Have you taken a long hard look at this off season? If so you'd see that most every other team has followed suit and dropped hundreds of millions on free agency. The Yankees didn't set the pace this year. Hate the Yankees if you want. I don't care, after all you don't pay my bills so do what you want. I'll just go on and enjoy rooting for my Yankees and if they win great, if not the sun will still come up tomorrow.
  3. What is it about the New York Yankees do you hate? --Nothing really. Be it winning or the soap operas. It's all good. George Steinbrenner’s philosophy or the team? --Neither. That sort of owner is what I'd want. One willing to spend what it takes. He didn't make the rules. The team--well, pinstripes, tradition, personalities! Come on! What more do you want? George Steinbrenner purchased the Yankees in 1973 for $8.7 million dollars. Can you believe that? --Yes, because CBS screwed up the franchise and he made a great deal buying low and will sell very very high one day. By the way in 2006 dollars that would be $35.3 million. A bargain at that price. My question is? Had George Steinbrenner purchased and applied this exact same philosophy / blue print to another team and had the same results, would you currently hate that team? --I grew up an A's fan under Charlie Finley so what can I say? Tightwads or spenders--I like the colorful owners. Now they are the “Evil Empire” for winning. --Yeah, and the Dead Sox don't spend a lot of money from the country club Yawkey era to now? Do you hate MLB for not setting a definitive salary cap and using the luxury tax instead? --Not really. My A's have done alright under all systems. No system is perfect. I think the Yankees would win under a cap system, too. Those are not dummies who just spend stupidly. Maybe Steinbrenner is reverting to his '80s ways of late but at least the luxury tax funnels money around. It's not Steiny's fault the Royals have inept ownership and mangement. Are you sick of them wining all the time? --No, because money is no guarantee of "winning." Last I looked the World Series champs were StL, ChiWS, Bos, Fla, Ariz, Ana of late and the NYY do not win it all the time. In fact, 26 times since 1973 the NYY have not won it all. Come on, man, MLB has better parity than the NBA and NFL which have salary caps. Look at the playoff teams even. Beating your favorite team in the playoffs? --Despite the A's losing to the NYY a few times, I'm more mad at Jeremy Gumby for not sliding and Hudson not pitching well in the past. Those were great series though and, as a fan, you cannot ask for anything more. I never thought the NYY won because of money. It was guys like Jeter, El Duque, Rivera, Bernie who did Oakland in more than the free agents. Share your reasons for hating this team? --I'm not a Yankee hater at all. Can't get worked up about them. Personally, I find Red Sox, Cub, Giant and Dodger fans more annoying. Love 'em or hate 'em, beats being the Hotlanta Blands. Personally, they don't have to win it all but I love it when the Yankees are strong. I mean, did you watch the Cards-Tigers World Series...zzzzzzz! Give me the Yankees going to at least the ALCS and winning or losing. There's a buzz when they are in the playoffs that is just not there with other teams. Sorry, but dynasties or having some team fans love or hate is good for sports. Look at golf--the most boring sport on the planet next to soccer--Tiger Woods makes it must-see TV. Greatness or soap operas--that's what you want with sports.
  4. I believe that most of the hatred is aimed at George as he is without a doubt a the owner with the most PASSION for his team.... People often mistake that for Greed, when all the MAN is doing is trying to put the best possible product on the field each and every day.... I also think most fans with any knowledge would LOVE to have an owner like GEORGE bankrolling their team!!!!
  5. i dont hate the yankees i love the yankees and its not my fault there the best
  6. First of all... great job on the question. It's important to state that I'm a Yankee fan before I begin. Naturally, I don't hate the Yankees. This is my team and has been for 30+ years. I think George has done a tremendous job in the business side of things. I do critique him for panicky and emotional moves that are detrimental to the team as a whole and have a negative effect on the long-term picture of the team's health. After the Steinbrenner-Winfield fiasco (and that's exactly what it was), George was booted from the game. It was clear that this hurt him personally. He was eventually allowed to take some part in management decisions but left the running of the team to baseball people who knew what they were doing. This should be Steinbrenner's legacy -- ie, not so much the team he puts on the field but the baseball people that brought the Yankees their last dynasty. It was his baseball people that put together an exceptional farm system. They helped create a team chemistry that can only be built with players accustomed to playing with eachother. They worked hard to get rid of malcontents and trouble-makers. When changes were necessary, they tweaked the lineup. These weren't wholesale changes, just enough to make the team stronger. A strong bench, a big-game pitcher, a little speed, etc.. Steinbrenner's involvement with the Yankees grew with each championship and he eventually reverted back to what he did in the 80s. He started to break the team up in favor of big name, expensive veterans. If you'll recall... in the late-90s, nobody wanted to leave this team. Players would re-sign quickly (often for less) and not even enter the market because they wanted to play for the Yankees. It was a throw-back to the dynasties of the 20s through 60s. The turning point of the baseball people running the show and Steinbrenner taking over the team occurred when they signed Roger Clemens. It was a sign to me that Steinbrenner was back and signaled the end of a great period that many teams would be hard-pressed to duplicate in this modern-age. I don't question Steinbrenner as a business man. I do question the many knee-jerk reactions based purely on emotion that he engages in. The Yankees are once again Steinbrenner's team... 100%. It is somethng that was clearly highlighted when Andy Pettite left the team because of the *indifference* Steinbrenner (*not* the baseball people) displayed toward him. Pettite just wasn't Steinbrenner's "type of ballplayer". When it comes to baseball, Steinbrenner isn't always a clear-headed thinker. He lets his passions, prejudices and ego rule him. When you surround yourself with good, experienced and capable baseball people... you should let them do their jobs. They proved themselves during the 90s. Steinbrenner has proved himself a great businessman. When these two elements meet, it causes the internal conflicts you see today... with a manager like Joe Torre fighting for his job, Zimmer quiting in disgust, and many more examples. Yankee fans, like myself, have little choice over how the team is run. I would hazzard a guess that given a choice, most of us would prefer the type of team created during the late 90s (and previous dynasties) versus the teams we have today -- money would not even be the main topic of discussion. As it stands, I'll continue to root for the Yankees without question. The state of baseball remains the same... go out and get the big guns. Every team engages in the same behavior (or would if they could). Steinbrenner just happens to be better than most at this game. He also cares alot more than most owners about his team. For this, I give him a big thumbs up! .
  7. George's philosiphy, but it is hilarious that they haven't won the world series in how long, but they have the most money. It also intrigues me why they go after good hitters and not good pitchers when pitching is the name of the game.
  8. For all of those that may have got the wrong impression it appears to me that Play Ball is not putting the team down. He's simply asking Yankee haters their logic for hating the Yankees. His question referring to Had George Steinbrenner purchased and applied this exact same philosophy / blue print to another team and had the same results, would you currently hate that team? obviously proves that. ( I personally would like to see Yankee haters answer that question ) George is a business man. His philosophy of going after experienced players is no different than someone who owns a business hiring the most qualified person applying. There's nothing wrong with hiring the best available person for the job. The media makes them out to be bad guys to the general baseball public which is not good. It's not all about free agents with them. I do believe that Mattingly,Jeter,Williams,Posada, Rivera, Cabrera, and Pettitte were in house home grown talent. If there's anything to hate you can hate MLB for not having the cahoonies to set a salary cap.
  9. i can't stand the yankees because george steinbrenner and the whole damn organization is so damn arrogant cocky and egotistical and they are a disgrace to the game as they are everything that's wrong with baseball and i don't care if you like my answer or not i'm telling you the truth point blank deal with it
  10. Disliking the Yankees has nothing to do with Steinbrenner I disliked them as a team long before he came along as an owner. Note I said as a team. I do respect certain players from the past, Mantle, DiMaggio, Gehrig to name a few. I also think Jeter is one of the finest players to ever represent baseball and a role model for all children. I dislike the Yankees because of a thing called sporting rivalry. It's fun to tease and be teased by fans from the other team. Just as long as it does not get out of hand. I was born into a Red Sox loving family. Somehow, my son became a Mets fan so I watch them now too. My niece is a Yankee fan, I think she did it just to get my dad. It's all in good fun. I think the thing is to keep baseball alive and support your team. Recognize talent. And yes, we can be pig headed about our teams when we want to it's part of the game. I don't think baseball would be baseball without the Yankee haters, Red Sox haters etc. You have to admit though we have one of the most exiting areas to live in for baseball Yankees, Red Sox, Mets. Can ya ask for more? Edit: In case I was not clear no I would not hate the other team if he had poured the money into it. I think it may go back to that Ruth sale for the play "No No Nannette" historically anyway. Personally, I'm a Red Sox fan we have always been against the Yanks.
  11. the arrogant fans. now I know all arent like that. I hate the arrogant ones.
