Batting average? what is the average batting average for players. Is it 250 or 260 or what
How is it possible for ones batting average to be higher that the on base percentage? If anytime you get a hit it increases your batting average and on base percentage and if you get a walk it increases your on base percentage so shouldnt the on base percentage always be a minimum of either equal or higher than the batting average? I read that it is rare but possible that someones batting average could be higher than their on base percentage. How is this possible? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_base_percentage
What is the highest TEAM batting average ever for one game in MLB? For example, the New York Yankees had 25 hits in 49 at bats today, for a single-game team batting average of .510. I would like to know the highest ever batting average one team has achieved in one complete game (9 innings or 8 if home team), in the modern era of baseball. I searched the internet but could find nothing.
By how many points does your batting average increase or decrease? I already know that your batting average increases 1 point when you get a hit and decreases when u get an out but what about two run homers, solo home runs, sacrifice flies, RBI single, and doubles or triples how much points does it increase if you would do each of those?
Is it possible to have an on base percentage lower than a batting average? I was at a restaurant a few weeks ago, just a short time into the MLB season, when I saw a graphic on the Diamondbacks Chad Tracy. At the time he had a batting average slightly above .300, but an OBP slightly below .300. Is that possible? The only way I could see that happening is if say he got credit for a single but was thrown out trying for second, something like that. I guess what I'm really asking is whether it was just a typo.
Question on batting average allowed by a pitcher? In your opinion, what would be the highest batting average allowed by a major league starting pitcher over a season for him to still be considered an elite pitcher? I know there are other considerations such as walks, earned run average, etc., but generally speaking.
Is .318 a good batting average for a sophomore in high school with a wood bat? I played fall ball this year in high school, it's mostly juniors and seniors, and I'm a sophomore. In the league you can only use wood bats. It was my first time using a Wood bat during games and i finished at the top of my team at .318(our team wasn't very good). Anyway is this a good batting average for a sophomore using a wood bat?
Do walks effect your batting average? I have been given the task of keeping track of our co-ed softball teams batting average, and want to make sure I am doing it correctly. Do you just not count the walk as a plate apperance? Please help!
Statistic Q! Magglio Ordonez of the Detroit Tigers had the highest batting average in the? Magglio Ordonez of the Detroit Tigers had the highest batting average in the 2007 Major League Baseball season. His average was .363. (b) What is the probability of getting three hits in a particular game? (c) What is the probability of not getting any hits in a game? (d) What is the probability of getting at least one hit?
Should Tony Gwynn's .338 career batting average be recognized as the greatest of all times? A few weeks ago i had asked who was the best hitter post jackie robinson era & i was given the answer of Gwynn.338 Now because Gwynn played against the best players in the world as Ty Cobb (.367) only played against the best in the USA should it be Gwynn who should be regarded as having the highest batting average in MLB history? How about an asterisk for Cobb .*367 *Did not play against the best players?
Why do people value batting average over on base pct. or slugging? IMO, the two most important "rate" statistics for hitters are on base pct. and slugging pct. OBP measures a hitter's ability to extend an inning/create scoring opportunities by reaching base (and not wasting outs) while slugging measures the ability to advance a baserunner. Without either of these, you can't score. But it seems that batting average is still the "main" number in some people's minds. Why is that? But Prashant, the most important thing is to get on base, don't you think? Keep in mind that drawing walks is a skill and isn't just something that comes out of bad control by the pitcher. Look at it this way: Player A has a .330 batting average and a .350 on base pct. Player B has a .280 batting average and a .400 on base pct. Would you rather have a player that gets an out 65% of the time, or one that gets out only 60% of the time? And force outs don't add to a players on base pct. As far as the batter's statistics go, they're counted as outs.
Why do most broadcasts still show batting average instead of OBP? When you're watching a game and they show average, homers, and RBI, why don't they instead show on-base percentage, or at least add it beside the average (some do, but not all)? It's a much more telling statistic, especially in combination with batting average. For example, if you were looking only at batting average, you'd think Jeff Francoeur and Adam Dunn were about equally successful (.256 to .255). Showing OBP, however, would show that Dunn is at a healthy .385 to Francoeur's horrible .282. I'm not asking for runs created, VORP, or any sabermetric stats - just common sense things like OBP or OPS. Is there just too much tradition with those three categories?
Is anyone comparable to Ichiro in having a good batting average and a mediocre OBP? Of "Qualified Leaders" in Y!'s baseball stats, he's seventh for average and tied with four others for 17th in OBP. I know this is not a new situation, but it seems like a fairly small contact hitter might be able to take a few more walks, especially when he's a good base stealer. Oh well. Even with that "deficiency," I'd still like to have him playing for my teams instead of the Mariners.
How is a batter's batting average calculated? Does anyone know the formula that is used to calculate a batter's batting average?? Thanks (RED SOX ARE NUMBER 1!!) FYI "Patrick", STD's have nothing to do with baseball. And I asked about BATTING averages, last time I checked BATTING averages were not covered in high school math. "Patrick": so no one contracts HIV from heterosexual contact, why don't you ask you "doctor" friend about these stats...and it takes one to know one.. "Around 47% of all people diagnosed with AIDS were probably infected with HIV through male-to-male sexual contact, while people exposed through heterosexual contact comprise around 17% of the total. Since the beginning of the epidemic, the number of heterosexual infections has increased dramatically. According to CDC estimates, heterosexual contact led to about one third of new AIDS diagnoses and one third of new HIV diagnoses in 2005."
How can I get a better batting average? I've been playing softball for 2 years now. I always make it in the team because I am a really good fielder, and I started out batting well but i've gotten worse every time. Can anyone please tell me how I can get a better batting average?
Batting Average Higher than On Base Percentage? So I play MLB The Show 08 on my PS3 and recently I noticed something that I thought could never be possible... my batting average is HIGHER than my OBP... I have gotten several hit-by-pitches, and many walks, so how can this be. I think it is because I try to push too many singles into doubles but get tagged out, but my friend argues my point. What is the real reason for this rare event?
who has the best batting average on artificial turf at night in baseball? my dad was asked this question in a radio station contest and he won. he pased away 3 years ago and i don't remember the answer. What does a batting average start at? I play baseball, and I'm good at scoring and love to do it, and I should know this, but I forgot, at the beginning of the season, when no one has hit or anything, does the average start at .000 or 1.000?
