What is your Yahoo! Answers Batting Average? (Questions Answered in proportion to Best Answers)? I sort of wish Yahoo! would do something like this and let us know the quality of the answerer versus the shear boredom of the person who has nothing else to do all day long except answer questions, until they've amassed some ungodly number of best answers. Three cheers for quality over quantity and entertainment over inanity. horseluva's YABA = .012 My YABA = .245 and shooting for a .300 YABA Anyone out there have something better? Best player to not make the All-Star team? I would say Pablo Sandoval. 2nd best batting average in the league and he still didn't make the all star team. Others would be ian kinsler and mark reynolds. Mark Reynolds now is 2nd in home runs (I think) Whose yours?
Should Tony Gwynn's .338 career batting average be recognized as the greatest of all times? A few weeks ago i had asked who was the best hitter post jackie robinson era & i was given the answer of Gwynn.338 Now because Gwynn played against the best players in the world as Ty Cobb (.367) only played against the best in the USA should it be Gwynn who should be regarded as having the highest batting average in MLB history? How about an asterisk for Cobb .*367 *Did not play against the best players?

That is, it should not be displayed as a histogram. A. True B. False
What should historians do with 1887 batting stats? When doing some research on baseball records, I was blown away to find out that the three highest seasonal batting averages all came from the same year: 1887. That year Tip O'Neil hit .485, Pete Browning hit .457, and Bob Caruthers hit .456 all on American Association teams. Well that's quite impressive, isn't it? Then I went to research who had the most hits in a season. Well, we all know it's Ichiro's 262 hits in 2004, right? Wrong! Guess who does have the most hits in a season. Well its a tie between our old friends Tip O'Neil and Pete Browning; they each had 275 hits one season! And guess what year that happened? 1887, of course. How is it that these players accomplished such remarkable hitting stats that year? Well, the answer is simple. In the year 1887, and only 1887, MLB counted WALKS as HITS. Ridiculous, huh? Well, here's something else to consider: In 1887 it took FOUR STRIKES to strike out and FIVE BALLS to get a walk, which was a hit. Weird, eh? Apparently in the 1960's MLB management said the 1887 stats shouldn't count, but more recently said that they should, since that was the way things were done at the time. Some historians have adjusted the numbers and given Tip O'Neil a still very impressive .435 for 1887 instead of .485, but this means he has the 2nd best batting average instead of the best (Hugh Duffy hit .440 for the Boston Beaneaters in 1894, which is at least the National League's record). So what should historians do? Adjust the 1887 stats? Accept them as how things were done at the time? Erase them from the history books? Give them all asterisks? Or should we take it one step further and ignore all records from the 19th Century, before the "Modern Era" of baseball (including Hugh Duffy), since there were other strange, unfamiliar intricacies of the game from that time? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hit_%28base… http://dmbworldseriesreplay.wordpress.co… http://www.baseball-almanac.com/hitting/… http://www.baseball-almanac.com/hitting/…

Which batsman had the best year and which one had it worst? Out of all major batsmen in cricket, for whom was 2007 the best year as far as batting average and century go, and for which batsman this was the worst year? I think this was worst year for Afridi, as he kept losing wicket quickly without scoring much (excluding 20/20). But i'm not sure for whom it was best year.
what do you guys think of albert callaspo? i know.. no one probably ever mentions him but he has one of the best batting averages in the league. do you think hes nothing special? or do you think he could be a sleeper?
Can an argument be made that Ichiro Suzuki is the best player in MLB today? Ichito had a seven year career batting average in Japan of .353 and a total of 1,278 hits. This is his seventh year in MLB and he has an additional 1,539 hits here and will finish this season with around 2,900 in his baseball career to date. At his current pace he would smash the career hit record of Pete Rose and finish his career with around 4,500 hits. In his seven years in MLB he has never had less than 200 hits in a season, never hit less than .300, never scored less than 100, and has averaged more than 40 stolen bases per season. In addition to all of this he just might have the strongest and most accurate throwing arm in the game today, he is a great teammate, a total team player, great in the dugout, runs out every groundball at full speed, never argues with the umpires, and has never been tossed from a game in his entire career. Can anyone tell me why he should not be considered the best all-around player in the game today?
Batting Average Statistics Question? There is a graph with 5 bars. .320-.329 has a very low bar. .330-.339 also has a very low bar. The two bars in the middle are very, very high. and the last bar is very low. This distribution of data shows lots of lifetime averages in the middle classes, but tails off sharply at both the upper and lower ends. What best explains the fact that there are very few averages in the lowest class? A. Batting averages lie on a bell-shaped curve. B. Histograms always have taller bars in the middle. C. There may be other hitters in the 320s, but they didn't make the top 30. D. Very few batters are skillful enough to have the very highest batting averages. E. The histogram is symmetrical.
How come in every baseball era, even the best hitters of all time fail far more often than they succeed? The best lifetime batting average in the MLB of all time is only 366 by Ty Cobb. Thats only 36 percent of success! And no one in MLB history ever hit close to 500 in a season. Should there be a rule helping the offense more? The balance between pitchers is hitters is in strong favor for the pitchers. If that really was balanced, you would see hitters over 500. Why cant any hitters succeed more than failing? Is getting a basehit simply more luck than skill?
What player has compiled the highest career & single season batting Avg. since the post Jackie Robinson era? Since the post Jackie Robinson integration era in MLB as all the different races have been allowed to compete at the big league level what player has compiled the highest career & single season batting average? Do the MLB batting avg. records of Ty Cobb career (.367) or Hugh Duffy in 1894 batting (.438) in single season or any record pre integration not have enough credibility because the best competition was not on the diamond like today?
Why is it so hard and rare for a MLB baseball player to have a batting average over 350? I asked this before and the only answer i got was pitching and major league pitching? What about major league batting? Why do the pitchers have so much of an edge over the batters in the MLB? How come in todays baseball there is such a small variation in batting averages which is basically 350 and under for a season at best. Thats only 35 percent which is wayyy less than half that a best players possible at any time could get a hit. Thats crazy and pathetic! How come there is no 400 or 500 or 750 or 850 or 950 batting averages anywhere? How can this be a good thing?
Average cost of softball bat? I want to try out for the softball team...so I need a bat. Problem is I doubt i'll make it (little experience) And I know that if I don't, I won't ever really use the bat. So how much do you think I should spend on a good one? I don't want the worst, nor the best...Just an average bat.
Is a .200 batting average good? I'm just starting to learn baseball and i just wanna pick a favorite player. i dont wanna seem weird and just pick the best player of all time but i dont wanna pick a bad one either..thank you!
How is it possible for ones batting average to be higher that the on base percentage? If anytime you get a hit it increases your batting average and on base percentage and if you get a walk it increases your on base percentage so shouldnt the on base percentage always be a minimum of either equal or higher than the batting average? I read that it is rare but possible that someones batting average could be higher than their on base percentage. How is this possible? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_base_percentage
What is the highest TEAM batting average ever for one game in MLB? For example, the New York Yankees had 25 hits in 49 at bats today, for a single-game team batting average of .510. I would like to know the highest ever batting average one team has achieved in one complete game (9 innings or 8 if home team), in the modern era of baseball. I searched the internet but could find nothing.
By how many points does your batting average increase or decrease? I already know that your batting average increases 1 point when you get a hit and decreases when u get an out but what about two run homers, solo home runs, sacrifice flies, RBI single, and doubles or triples how much points does it increase if you would do each of those?
Is it possible to have an on base percentage lower than a batting average? I was at a restaurant a few weeks ago, just a short time into the MLB season, when I saw a graphic on the Diamondbacks Chad Tracy. At the time he had a batting average slightly above .300, but an OBP slightly below .300. Is that possible? The only way I could see that happening is if say he got credit for a single but was thrown out trying for second, something like that. I guess what I'm really asking is whether it was just a typo.
Do walks effect your batting average? I have been given the task of keeping track of our co-ed softball teams batting average, and want to make sure I am doing it correctly. Do you just not count the walk as a plate apperance? Please help!
Why do people value batting average over on base pct. or slugging? IMO, the two most important "rate" statistics for hitters are on base pct. and slugging pct. OBP measures a hitter's ability to extend an inning/create scoring opportunities by reaching base (and not wasting outs) while slugging measures the ability to advance a baserunner. Without either of these, you can't score. But it seems that batting average is still the "main" number in some people's minds. Why is that? But Prashant, the most important thing is to get on base, don't you think? Keep in mind that drawing walks is a skill and isn't just something that comes out of bad control by the pitcher. Look at it this way: Player A has a .330 batting average and a .350 on base pct. Player B has a .280 batting average and a .400 on base pct. Would you rather have a player that gets an out 65% of the time, or one that gets out only 60% of the time? And force outs don't add to a players on base pct. As far as the batter's statistics go, they're counted as outs.
Why do most broadcasts still show batting average instead of OBP? When you're watching a game and they show average, homers, and RBI, why don't they instead show on-base percentage, or at least add it beside the average (some do, but not all)? It's a much more telling statistic, especially in combination with batting average. For example, if you were looking only at batting average, you'd think Jeff Francoeur and Adam Dunn were about equally successful (.256 to .255). Showing OBP, however, would show that Dunn is at a healthy .385 to Francoeur's horrible .282. I'm not asking for runs created, VORP, or any sabermetric stats - just common sense things like OBP or OPS. Is there just too much tradition with those three categories?
How is a batter's batting average calculated? Does anyone know the formula that is used to calculate a batter's batting average?? Thanks (RED SOX ARE NUMBER 1!!) FYI "Patrick", STD's have nothing to do with baseball. And I asked about BATTING averages, last time I checked BATTING averages were not covered in high school math. "Patrick": so no one contracts HIV from heterosexual contact, why don't you ask you "doctor" friend about these stats...and it takes one to know one.. "Around 47% of all people diagnosed with AIDS were probably infected with HIV through male-to-male sexual contact, while people exposed through heterosexual contact comprise around 17% of the total. Since the beginning of the epidemic, the number of heterosexual infections has increased dramatically. According to CDC estimates, heterosexual contact led to about one third of new AIDS diagnoses and one third of new HIV diagnoses in 2005."
