Better single-season accomplishment: a 57-game hitting streak or a .400 batting average? I asked a similar question last week involving a 56-game hitting streak or 73 home runs being the easier single-season record to break. The overwhelming majority of answers were for 73 home runs being easier to break (this being the steroids era, after all). But which of these two is greater: 57 consecutive games with a hit or a .400 batting average for the whole season?
.400 batting average for the season or a 57 game hitting streak? 1) Which would be more interesting to see? 2) Which would be the bigger achievement? 3) Which do you think we'll see first?

Do u think any player will ever end the season with a 400 or better Batting average again? And if you do think so who will it be in your opinion? There hasn't been a player who ended a season with a 400 Avg or better since ted Williams did it with a 406 Avg.
When calculating your batting average does a walk count towards your average? If I go 2 for 5 with 2 hits, 2 strikeouts and a walk is my batting average .400 or is it .500?
13. A baseball player’s batting average equals the number of hits divided by the number of times at bat,? 13. A baseball player’s batting average equals the number of hits divided by the number of times at bat, expressed in decimal form. One player had the results shown below. • First year batting average: 0.300 • Second year batting average: 0.400 • Combined 2-year batting average: 0.360 If he was at bat a total of 450 times for both years combined, what was the total number of times he was at bat the second year?

Will there ever be a Batting Title won with a .400 + average? George Brett won with .390 in 1980 closest time.
Why is Aaron Rowand in the major league with a .210 batting average? And why did the Giants give him 400 at bats. That's more than Juan Uribe who has 20 HRs and 77 RBIs. Rowand: 396 ABs, .210 BA, 9 HRs, 21 RBIs. Uribe : 310 ABs, .251 BA, 20 HRs, 77 RBIs.

Is Carlos Beltran gonna bat .400 like Ted Williams? Do you think Beltran will maintain his .400 batting average for the entire season?
ratio Batting average? In Baseball a player's batiing average is the ratio of hits to the number of times he or she has batted. Thus, if the player has an average of .003, it means that he or she got 300 hits in 1000 at bats. In order to have an average of .300, how many hits would a batter have to get in 400 times at bat? .300 x = 400?????
Why do baseball players who pray before batting often strike out? It's a very rare player who can to keep a batting average above 400... and that's only 4 hits out of every ten tries. Hmm???
What players have hit at least .400 through 100 games since Ted Williams batted .406 in 1941? Obviously no one has batted .400 for a season since Williams but is there any players since then that have at least maintained a .400 average for the first 100 games of the season?
In the MLB, what's a all-star, above average, mediocre, poor, batting average? I'm sure that .200 and under is poor and .400 is super phenomenal, but how do you rank them in between? (like say .298)
Joe DiMaggio's Batting Record... Question is in the detail...? Joe Dimaggio, one of the longest standing records in sports is the 56-game hitting streak (in baseball). Assume that a player on a long "hot streak" is batting about .400, which is about the best that anyone ever hits over a period of about 50 or more games. (A batting average of .400 means the batter gets a hit 40% of the time. Typically, only a handful of players each year hit that well for a period of time as long as his. Question A. What is the probability that a player batting .400 will get at least one hit in four at-bats? Question B. Use the result in part A to calculate the probability of a .400 hitter getting a hit in 56 consecutive games, assuming four at-bats per game. Question C. Suppose that, instead of batting .400 a player has a more ordinary average of .300. In that case, what is the probability f the player getting a hit in 56 consecutive games, assuming four at-bats per game? Question D. Considering the results in part B and C and the face that baseball has been played for about 100 years, are you surprised that someone set a record of hitting 56 consecutive games? Explain Clearly. Thats it I would appreciate any help on parts A,B,C,D... Thanks guy you are all so incredibly helpful!!
Which stat will never be equaled ever again? a.) 100 stolen bases? b.) 30 wins by a pitcher? c.) 3 or more pitchers with 20+ victories on one team? d.) .400 batting average for a season e.) seven steals of home by one player in one season(done by Rod Carew in 1969? f.) 60+ home runs? g.)all of the above.
Why is it so hard and rare for a MLB baseball player to have a batting average over 350? I asked this before and the only answer i got was pitching and major league pitching? What about major league batting? Why do the pitchers have so much of an edge over the batters in the MLB? How come in todays baseball there is such a small variation in batting averages which is basically 350 and under for a season at best. Thats only 35 percent which is wayyy less than half that a best players possible at any time could get a hit. Thats crazy and pathetic! How come there is no 400 or 500 or 750 or 850 or 950 batting averages anywhere? How can this be a good thing?
HW: short average problem need a little help? A player has a batting average over many games of .400. In his next game , he goes 2 for 4, which is a batting average of .500 for the game. Does it follow what his new batting average is (.400+.500)/2=.450? explain
Do you see any chance of this batter hitting .400? I was wondering do you see any chance of Jason Bartlett the shortstop for the Tampa Bay Rays finishing the season with a batting average at or above .400? His current batting average is .358
Players who were not that good with impressive career totals? It really annoys when a player is hot and cold for his entire career with half decent stats and walks into huge numbers. Like someone who hits btween .260 and .300 for and averages about 20 homeruns a season for about 20 seasons will come out with extremely impressive totals like .285 Batting Average and 400 homeruns and he'll probably be a hall of famer. Am I the only one hates these kinda players, and those misleading career totals?
Is Robinson Cano on fire or what? 8 Home Runs, .400 Batting Average, 17 RBIs, 21 Runs! How's that for homegrown talent?
How come Ichiro wasnt able to hit .400 after he broke the all time record for most hits ever in a season? He broke the all hit record for a season with 262. Why was Ichiro not able to have a batting average of 400 or more? He broke te ALL TIME HITS RECORD IN A SEASON!!! Other people hit more than 400 over a dozen times and got much fewer hits. How can hitting 400 (which many other already did in the past) be harder than breaking an all time recod? If getting breaking the all time record for hits in a season is not enough to reach .400, WHAT WILL? But hits are the only thing that increases batting averages! Walks only make it stay the same.
How can I gain more power when i'm batting? I'm 16 years old 5'9'' and 130lbs. I'm a switch hitter and always hit for average but never have great power numbers. Whenever scouts come i think they don't care that I'm a consistent hitter who bats .400, they look for the guy that 1 out of 15 at bats hits a home run and has about a .250 average. How can i increase my power?
Rogers Hornsby (1921-25) Was this the best hitting 5 year period in baseball history? I still think Babe Ruth was the greatest hitter in baseball history bar none but check out these stats for that 5 year period for Hornsby: Games: 696 At Bats: 2679 Runs: 615 Hits: 1098 Doubles: 206 Triples: 66 Homers: 144 Rbi's: 598 Batting average: .400
Which of these 2, if possible ever again is likely to happen next. A triple crown winner or .400 hitter? BQ- If you expect either of them to happen again, which player(s) do you think can do it? I'm referring to triple crown in hitting by the way, not pitching. For those who don't know, a triple crown is when a hitter leads the league in HR, RBI and batting average. If interested for pitchers, it's when a pitcher leads the league in Wins, K's and ERA. For those who don't know, Ted Williams was the last batter to bat .400 which was in 1941. I believe the next closest since was Tony Gwynn in the 1994 strike season when he batted .394 The last player to hit the triple crown in baseball was another Red Sox player, Carl Yastrzemiski in 1967, when he hit .326, with 44 HR and 121 RBI If I think either of the 2 is to happen again, I'll say the Triple Crown, and I'm going to take a shot and say Albert Pujols will be the hitter to do it. Oh for those if interested. There have been 35 times where a batter hit .400 (some more than once including Ted Williams). 16 times have there been Triple Crown winners (Only 2 to do it more than once are Ted Williams and Rogers Hornsby)
Do you think Mitch Moreland has a chance of winning the Rookie of the Year? He only played 47 games last year, and he hit 9 home runs in 143 at bats. This year, he has 16 home runs in 400 at bats. His average is a lot higher than last years.
Chipper Jones? Do you think Chipper Jones can get back to a .400 batting average. He is batting .393 at the moment.
Need help w/ my hitting....? I am a 14-year-old select baseball player.... I have around a .400 batting average but am disappointed w/ my hitting because I am hitting the ball in the gaps but not very solid... I have taped my in-game at-bats and my mechanics are fine... Top 5 most underated baseball players? Rank your top 5 most under-rated baseball players of the modern era, and explain why. 1. Johnny Mize- Lifetime .312 batting average with 359 home runs, yet he is not in the Hall of Fame. 2. Duke Snider- With 407 home runs and almost .300 lifetime batting average, The duke could have been considered the best center fielder of his time, but with Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays in the same city he wasn't even in contention for the best center fielder in his city. 3. Rogers Hornsby- Anyone who knows baseball knows how good Rogers Hornsby was but he has been forgotten by the common fan. Hit over .400 batting average in 3 seasons. Lifetime .358 with 302 home runs. 4. Bill Buckner- With borderline hall of fame statistics, it's a shame he is remembered for one bad play. 5. Todd Helton- With the highest active career OBP% and the 3rd highest active career batting average, along with 319 home runs, you would think he would get much more attention then he does. So what does your list look like? I meant to say it took too long for Johnny Mize to be put in the hall of fame. For missing several of his prime years fighting in the war, his stats are very, very good.
Math problems...please help!!!!? Question: During the baseball season, Davon got 12 hits in 30 times at bat, giving him a .400 batting average. If he starts to get a hit every time he bats, in how many games will he be better than a .500 hitter. A. 7 B. 4 C. 19 D. 11 I'm 12....

What's going on? I'm confused? Okay, so my mom told me she was looking at my stats from 2009 when I was in 5th grade. Now I'm in 8th grade. Back then, I had a .400 batting average and used to be like one of the best in my grade. Now, my batting average has lowered to .100. I mean, she had a serious face when she told me this. I love baseball, and I want to make a career out of it. I practice all the time and everything. Does this mean I'm not gonna get far, does it mean I suck, does it mean baseball isn't gonna be my life again? Better not. I'm serious, I have been commited to this sport since 2004. I am in the most perfect baseball body type there can be, and I'm an all-round player. Just lately, I haven't been doing really good. Orrrrrrr, is this all a slump and when I keep on practicing and practicing, I'll get better and be the same player I was in '09?
How long does it take your player to get called up on mlb 09 the show ? I created a player on mlb 09 the show. I have only been playing for about a month (In the game schedule) but I was wondering how do I get a good rating on a scout report and how long do i have to play before I get called up? My batting average has never gotten below .400 but I haven't hit any homeruns. Please help.
What are my chances at making it to MLB? i no it is hard to tell for a 12 year old, I am only 5,1 or 5,2 and 80-85 punds but is rising fast... but i pitch about 70-75mph 4 seam fast, a 70mph good dropping 2 seam fast, a nasty cutter going 60-65mph dropping from at batters head to a perfect strike or from top right corner to low and outside going near average fastball speed for my league, a slow curve(40-45) that drops on the plate that nobody can seem to lay off of, a fast curve (going from about 2o clock to 8o clock) dropping into strike zone at about 60-65mph and a change dropping at the end at about 60mph, i have about .400 batting average but is rising fast now...usually a good decent hit in the gap between outfield and infield (usually past 2nd basemen) for a base hit, but i can play decent 2nd base and short, and have good speed which im not worried about...got a chance at MLB? note i do no it is hard to tell for a 12 year old...
Why did players used to have higher batting averages and fewer home runs? Many remember that Ted Williams hit .406 for the 1941 season with the Red Sox. But the truth is that Teddy Ballgame's high season's average wasn't even in the Top 10 all-time. The accomplishment was that Williams was the MOST RECENT player to hit over .400. The man with the highest season's batting average was actually Tip O'Neill, who hit an astonishing .485 for the St. Louis Browns in 1887 (today's St. Louis Cardinals). That same year Pete Browning hit .457 for the Louisville Colonels and Bob Caruthers hit .456 for St. Louis. These men all played in the American Association at the time. The highest season batting average for the National League was Hugh Duffy with .440 on the Boston Beaneaters (today's Atlanta Braves) in 1894. In the 20th Century, several players had higher averages than Ted Williams, and all of them did so in the first quarter of the century: Nap Lajoie (.426 in 1901 for the Philadelphia Athletics, which is also the American League record), Rogers Hornsby (.424 in 1924 for St. Louis), George Sisler (.420 in 1922 and .407 in 1920 for St. Louis), Ty Cobb (.420 in 1911 and .409 in 1912 for the Tigers), and Joe Jackson (.408 in 1911 for Cleveland). Yet, despite these men having such great batting averages, they didn't hit that many home runs. When Tip O'Neil hit the record .485 in 1887, he only hit 14 home runs (hardly that amazing by modern standards). Pete Browning's .457 was matched by only 4 homers and Bob Caruthers' most home runs in a season was 16 in 1889. Today batters have no problem blasting home runs. But, conversely, their averages are rarely anywhere near .400. When Barry Bonds hit 73 homers in 2001 his average was only .328 and his highest average ever was .362 in 2004. The closest player to come close to .400 was Tony Gwynn, who hit .394 in 1994 (though apparently there's a question as to whether or not this should count because the season was shortened by the strike). Before Gwynn, George Brett had the highest average since Williams with .390 for the Royals in 1980. So why can today's players hit so many more home runs but not be able to approach the .400 mark? What made baseball back then so different? Was it the pitching? Was it the parks? Was it the hitting style? What has altered the game so drastically? * NOTE: Ted Williams hit 37 home runs in 1941, and a career high 43 home runs in 1949. http://www.baseball-almanac.com/hitting/hibavg2.shtml http://www.baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=oneiti01 http://www.baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=bondsba01 http://www.baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=willite01 http://www.baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=gwynnto01
Why were Batting Averages so HIGH during the DEAD BALL ERA....................? back then the hitting stats were insane! 400+ hitters were common. Why were the batting averages back then so high compared to today? The ball was dead and covered in spit. The pitchers could alter the ball to however they wanted it to their advantage. Why were the players still hitting so much better? Wheres the 400+ hitters today? Wheres the 30+ game winners? Wheres the 100+ single season base stealers? and why cant the players put up numbers anywhere near like this anymore even with the outrageously high salaries? If they are gonna be paid more, shouldnt they have to pitch more? Ty Cobb had a LIFETIME average of .367 and over 4000 hits! Rogers Hornsby hit .424 and had 42 homeruns in the same season., What player today can do this?
Are these Records Breakable? Comment whether or not it is possible and who may be able to break the record. Thanks, Scott Note: no records used earlier than 1950. _Strikeouts_ 400 strikeouts in one season? (most by Sandy Koufax - 382) _Batting Average_ .400 season batting average? Did batting averages decrease in the 40s and later because of night baseball? If you look at the numbers, today is not the all-time offensive high in the history of baseball. The actual offensive high point occurred during the 1920s and 1930s. This was the period commonly known as the live ball era, even though the only major differences were that cheap pitches such as the spitball were illegal and that multiple baseballs were used in games. All games were played during the daytime. Hitting .400 was a relatively frequent accomplishment. Power hitters were few in number, but not nonexistant. There was absolutely no base stealing. Night baseball began as a part-time experiment in 1935 and almost all games were played at night within a decade. Then batting averages suspiciously declined in the 40s and offense fell from its all-time high, never to return to such levels. However, the decline wasn't as great for the Cubs, the only team to still play day baseball (which they did until the 80s). Did night baseball cause the decline in offense 70 years ago?
how do i correctly do these algebra problems that i got marked wrong? 1. An investment of $1500 paid interest of $45 during a certain period. How much interest would an investment of $2000 invested at the same rate for the same length of time pay? Show how you checked your answer, please. 2. In baseball, a player's batting average is the ratio of hits to the number of times he or she has batted. Thus, if the player has an average of.300, it means he or she got 300 hits in 1000 bats. In order to have an average of .300, how many hits would the batter have to get in 400 times at bat? Show how you checked your answer, please. so far i have 300/1000 = x/400, do i just cross multiply? what do i let x equal? the teacher requires us to show the details of us checking the answers on the side, after we finish solving the problem.
General Baseball Question for those who really know the game? Name the two players in mlb history with at an individual total of at least 2500 hits, 200 HRs, 400 SBs, and a .300 or better career batting average?
How to get scouted to a D1 Baseball College? I am 16 and and just finished my sophmore season. I batted 412 with 16 homeruns. I batted .357 my freshman year on JV and worked hard and got on varsity and raised my batting average. I am alsoa great fielder I play 3 base. So if I hit atleast 400 my next two years can I get scouted to a D1 School?
Do you think Edgar Martinez deserves to be in the Hall of Fame? Before you say no because he was a DH, he was the greatest to ever take up that role. Bud Selig even said so and named the nest DH award the Edgar Martinez award. And Paul Molitor is in the Hall and played over 40% of his games as a DH. This however is one of the best cases for him, Edgar Martinez is just the 13th player eligible for Hall of Fame election to have posted a .300 batting average, .400 on-base and .500 slugging percentage in his career ... and 11 of the first 12 were all inducted into the Hall. The only one of those 12 not in the Hall is " Shoeless" Joe Jackson @How_Would_I_Know. Molitor had over 3600 more at bats than Edgar, Edgar would have reached 3000 hits had he not played on the astro turf he had in the Kingdom and messed up his knees here in Seattle. Edgar was moved to DH out of necessity due his knees not allowing him to field but we still had to have his bat. Any player asked about DHing hates it but Edgar never complained he did what was asked of him, and he did it better than anyone else. Molitor played less than 100 games in a season only twice. Edgar played fewer than 100 6 times. Molitor also played 3 more season total.
Which record is more significant and more likely to stand? Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak or Ted Williams Batting Average of .406 Which will happen first? Someone getting a 57 game hitting streak or someone hitting .400 agian.
Sachin Holds very little Batting Records compared to Don Bradman? Sachin has. Most Runs Most Centuries / 50's And By far holds no more Records than Ponting in that department, ALL of Sachins records have come from him playing the game for so long. Bradman Highest career batting average (minimum 20 innings): 99.94[210] Highest series batting average (5 Test series): 201.50 (1931–32)[211] Highest ratio of centuries per innings played: 36.25% (29 centuries from 80 innings)[212] Highest 5th wicket partnership: 405 (with Sid Barnes, 1946–47)[213] Highest 6th wicket partnership: 346 (with Jack Fingleton, 1936–37)[214] Highest score by a number 5 batsman: 304 (1934)[215] Highest score by a number 7 batsman: 270 (1936–37)[215] Most runs against one opponent: 5,028 (v England)[216] Most runs in one series: 974 (1930)[217] Most centuries scored in a single session of play: 6 (1 pre lunch, 2 lunch-tea, 3 tea-stumps)[218] Most runs in one day's play: 309 (1930)[219] Most double centuries: 12[220] Most double centuries in a series: 3 (1930)[221] Most triple centuries: 2 (equal with Brian Lara and Virender Sehwag)[222] Most consecutive matches in which he made a century: 6 (the last three Tests in 1936–37, and the first three Tests in 1938)[223] Bradman has averaged over 100 in seven different calendar years (*qualification 400 runs). No other player has achieved this in more than two calendar years. Fastest player to reach 2000 (in 22 innings),[224] 3000 (33 innings),[225] 4000 (48 innings),[226] 5000 (56 innings)[227] and 6000 (68 innings)[228] Test runs. So Its Quite funny too compare the too, where Bradman's Records come from batting Skill, and not the Time Played. Also feel free to inform me of a Tendulkar record that does not directly involve time played. MBMT - game plans? does bodyline ring a bell? I actually laughed at your comment, What did Sachin Average at 52 test matches? MBMT- Genuine Spinner????? Jim Laker 19 wickets in a match on UNCOVERED PITCHES. Concede defeat my friend Key words, YOUR SURE. So that acually supports my statment, which also is about Sachins Lack of batting records Ross, im sure you will actually find that EVERY cricketer thinks that bradman is the best Not Tendulkar :) Your Quite silly. and A7X, have you ever tried to play on an uncovered Pitch? They dont let you because they are too dangerous. so my friend, i think you should do some research before you make that statement, because u clearly have no Idea. Ross, im sure you will actually find that EVERY cricketer thinks that bradman is the best Not Tendulkar :) Your Quite silly. and A7X, have you ever tried to play on an uncovered Pitch? They dont let you because they are too dangerous. so my friend, i think you should do some research before you make that statement, because u clearly have no Idea. His Technique is poor? He is the greatest Batsman of all time, as shown by his records... And i play First grade for Bowral, and EVERY SINGLE TURF PITCH we play on is covered and maintained. So get your facts right my friend.

Why is Rogers Hornsby rarely talked about? The guy hit .400 like 3 times and had a career .358 batting average! I mean he put up good enough numbers he should be considered one of the greatest hitters of all time IMO. But most do not even consider him the best second baseman of all time! Why is this legend so forgotten?
Help with a ratio word question please [question posted in 'details']? Any help would be greatly appreciated: In baseball a player's batting average is the ratio of hits to the number of times he or she has batted. Thus, if the player has and average of .300, it means he or she got 300 hits in 1000 at bats. In order to have an average of .300, how many hits would the batter have to getin 400 times at bat?
Can someone help me to show how this was done ....? Confidence interval - mean 99% confidence level 0.264433333 mean 0.007280978 std. dev. 30 n 2.756 t (df = 29) 0.0037 half-width 0.2681 upper confidence limit 0.2608 lower confidence limit This data is showing that with 99% confidence the mean of the batting average for the selected teams is .2644. Being that this number is so much lower than the wanted .400 average shows that this goal would be hard to obtain. Team batting averages would have to be much higher than the .400 average to obtain an mean average across the board. Hope this answers the question.
Fantasy Football: What is considered a good amount of points to earn each week? This is my first time doing it. In terms of say a baseball like average what would be batting like .250, .400, or above in terms of the amount of points I earn per week. Know what I'm saying? I mean is 100 good? I already have 50 after tonight's game... Thanks Thanks
Will Toby Hall lead the White Sox back to the World Series? I don't see how they can be stopped, now that they've given almost $4m to a guy with over 400 - sorry, that's 40 - career homers, an incredible .265 batting average, and 2 career stolen bases. Is this the best deal of the offseason? Ozgard - Yes, I'm being facetious. It's not the worst signing by any means, but I was exaggerating to see what kind of response I'd get. There's not much news lately, so I thought I'd throw something out there.
Poll: Has your favorite team ever retired a players number on your birthday? I was close :) august 6 1989 Boston Red Soxs retired Carl Yastremski All-Time Great Boston Red Sox - OF,1B DH; Boston 1961-1983. 'Yaz' is one of the all-time great Boston Red Sox players. This popular player played his whole career; 23 years for the Red Sox. Boston Red Sox Baseball History. In 1967 Yastremski seemed to win games daily with his home runs as the Red Sox pounded their way to take the pennant on the last day of the season, with Yaz going 4 for 4. That year he won Triple Crown and was voted the Most Valuable Player in the American League, and won the Gold Glove Award; becoming only the third player in baseball history to win the Triple Crown and Gold Glove Award. Yastremski powered 44 home runs, scored 112 runs and had 121 RBI's, while batting .326. Although Yaz hit three world series homers and .400 batting, with 10 hits, the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Red Sox 4 games to 3. Yastremski led the Red Sox to more playoffs but the Boston team just could not collect any world series rings. Yaz smashed hits all over the baseball field including long doubles and homers but they still failed to win. Baseball Historian Hall of Famer, Carl Yastremski hit better than .300 in six different years and led the league in batting average three times. Carl Yastremski's career numbers are 3419 hits, batting .285, 646 doubles, 452 home runs and played in an amazing 3308 games. Yaz had 11988 official at bats. I was born on august 8 1989, two days later :))
Chipper Jones.. hall of famer or not? Reasons he should make it (in my opinion)- He has been the face of the Braves' franchise since 95 and made 11 playoff appearances with them has won a world series a 6 time all-star has won an mvp 2 time silver slugger single season HR record for an NL switch hitter 3rd all time on switch hitter HR list has been the epitome of a team player (changing positions to make room for another player, taking pay cuts to allow the Braves to pursue top free agents) has won a batting title He is the only switch hitter in Major League Baseball history to have a .300+ career batting average and 400 home runs Has been one of the most feared hitters in baseball for over a decade due being one of the game's best all-around hitters, being clutch, and being able to switch hit, which he does as good or better than anyone in history besides Mickey Mantle. i think he should be a first ballot hall of famer for sure if he continues to play and finishes with a .300+ avg and at least comes close to 500 HR
Is Chipper Jones a Hall of Famer? Chipper is my favorite all time player. I've been his fan for 14 years now. He's the all time leader in HRs in the Atlanta Braves organization, not the all time Braves however. He's one of the best switch hitters of all time, 3rd in all time HRs for switch hitters. He has a career .310 batting average, over 400 HRs, over .400 on base percentage, a career fielding percentage of .960, a six time all star, he had 8 straight 100+ RBI seasons, 14 straight 20+ home run seasons (streak still current), and still has one of the sweetest swings in the game. He has been a part of a World Series championship team, 1995, a part of 11 straight division titles (1995-2005), 3 World Series appearances, and the 1999 National League MVP. And also, consider where he has played for the last 12 years, Turner Field. Anyone who knows Turner Field knows it is a pitcher's ballpark. What he has done considering this is nothing short of incredible. He's a surefire HOF in my book.
Did Lefty O'Doul miss the HOF by 1 hit? In 1929, O'Doul was one hit shy of batting .400. Every post-1900 .400 hitter (except Joe Jackson) is in the Hall. Would O'Doul's extra hit have been the exclamation point on a .349 career batting average and enough to distract from his meager four seasons of +436 at bats and propelled him into the HOF?
Batting Averages going down in recent seasons? Since the homerun became the most important aspect of the game ( In the minds of the Executives who run the show ) and the players became "guessers" and not pure hitters, you will probably never see a guy winning a batting title with more than .360 not to mention .400. Those guys like Rod Carew,Roberto Clemente,George Brett,Ted Williams,Willie Mays, Hank Aaron were pure hitters, artists of hitting. Very seldom anybody saw them striking out looking on a ball on their hitting range, because when you are batting with two strikes on a possible RBI situation you are supposed to make contact, not to hit a homer, but to drive the ball. I am glad that I grow up watching the players from the '50s and '60s because I believe that for some of our recent "stars," it would be way uphill to play that kind of baseball.
Will Mauer bat .400 this year? His current average is .419, he hasn't been below .400 yet this season.
Algebra 1, Math Help!? You can use the formula a = h/n is you want to find the batting average a of a batter who has h hits in n times at bat. Solve this equation for h. Then, if Joseph has a batting average of .285 and has been at bat 400 times, how many hits does Joseph have?
