How can a baseball batter's batting average be larger then the on base percentage? It was brought to my attention tonight that there are two catchers in MLB that have a larger batting average then on base percetage. I can't figure out how. Who is the best/greatest Baseball Player of all time? I am gonna start off by saying I am in no way, shape or form a "HUGE" fan of baseball, nor do I have any knowledge of the intricate details of measuring averages, hits, things like that. That being said, I am a fan of sorts, meaning that I DO enjoy reading about games after the fact, I really really enjoy reading about the days of baseball past, where greats such as the Babe, Jackie Robinson and Lou Gehrig walked the field and I love reading all their stats. I'm not a complete idiot, so I do know, for example, what RBI stands for (runs batted in lol) and I know how to compare their hit and runs averages (for the most part). So this debate (I guess it's a debate, not sure what else to call it) is for my own curiosity. So, again, the question is, "Who is the Greatest/Best Baseball Player of all Time?". This question can be answered in many ways, so I will try very hard to make your job easy lol. Here are some things that I think can be used to measure this but, please, you already know I am not an expert on this sport, so if you think I need to include (or exclude) one of these measurements, do not hesitate to let me know. How Hard Is It To Learn Asian? I'm trying to figure out how I can more easily hook up with fobby Asian chicks in America, who I've got a crazy thing for. I've had decent success getting intimate with these little goddesses, but I think I'll have a better batting average if I can speak Asian with them. I can say some basic things like "neehow maw" and "wow hun how" and "shi shi," but not much else. I've been told by Asian women that my accent is very good, so I think it's just a vocabulary problem. Is dating a game for some women? I'm serious when I ask this question. I've not been in a steady relationship for a long time. Most times I go on a few dates and then something bad happens. Let's just say my batting average isn't that great in this particular scene. For some reason I'm good at formulas and algorithms, but not dating. That's just the way my brain was hardwired. That's also why I make my first dates simple and inexpensive. I don't like to blow my entire paycheck on something that isn't guaranteed. Last Thursday, I went on a date with some girl. My source revealed this girl wasn't interested beforehand. If that's the case, did she go out with me to begin with? I've been in this situation before. I've even been stood up a few times. If they're not interested, why do they go out with the guy? Is it because the men are expected to pay, and the women figure they'll get a free dinner? Do they get some sick pleasure setting them up and shooting them down? Why can't they just be honest? Is this some kind of game they like to play? Personally, I don't pursue something I'm not interested. I guess I haven't had much luck because I'm too honest. If I see something wrong, I correct the problem or I don't do it. Who agrees that evolution is just a theory? We did not come from monkeys. My degree was science/chemistry. Some scientist believe this junk theology...but many do not! It's a theory....in other words...an idea which has never been proven or disproven...therefore it remains a theory. Now a few examples of why I do not believe this theory: Any animal that has evolved does not remain....yet the monkey is still with us...the average day monkey has not evolved into a man! I believe many animals have adapted to their environment and thus their features change to meet their surrounding needs...thus adaptation! However, to evolve into something totally more advance such as monkey into man would mean that the monkey would no longer exist because man would take his place...why does the monkey still exist???? The same can be said for apes and all other animals someone could possibly say man evolved from! Why do they all still exist today? Charles Darwin was a very smart man. His adaptation theory is quite genius and his studies were revolutionary and also opened the eyes of the scientific community...however his evolution theory lacks common sense from such a pioneer! Even if you disagree with the above...how do you explain how any life began on earth? Life cannot just spring up...and Mathematically, it is inconceivable that anything as complex as a protein, let alone a living cell or a human, could spring up by chance. Consider the following: Nobody has ever seen a new species evolve. Evolutionists cannot point to any transitional fossils--creatures that are half reptile and half bird, for instance. Where are all the transitional species. Really there should be a continuous line of transitional species, in the order of 1000's of times more numerous than obviously distinct species, and yet we have a clumps of very distinct species. And no transitional forms.... Recent discoveries prove that even at the microscopic level, life has a quality of complexity that could not have come about through evolution. Evolution is only a theory. It is not a fact or a scientific law. 1st law of thermodynamics states the energy(in this case life) cannot be created or destroyed! In other words life cannot just form...some form of energy must have been present! This is not a theory, it's a law. Law of biogenesis. People once believed that maggots were spontaneously generated from the flesh of dead animals. They thought life could come from non-life. Louis Pasteur proved beyond doubt that life cannot arise from non-life. This is not a scientific theory, but a law. Proponents of evolution contend that life did arise spontaneously from non-life at least once in the past, in other words, that this particular natural law was broken or nonexistent sometime in the past. Again this cannot happen as energy cannot be created or destroyed!!! Even Archaeopteryx, once thought to be transitional between reptiles and birds, is not. Modern birds have been found deeper in the fossil record. For the most part nature's divisions are not blurred and indistinct, currently or in the fossil record. NOWHERE IN THE WORLD TODAY CAN ONE FIND PARTLY DEVELOPED APPENDAGES OR ORGANS, but, rather, everywhere there is perfect adaptation, perfect development for its intended purpose. That fact proves that EACH CREATURE, IN ALL ESSENTIAL FEATURES, HAS BEEN EXACTLY AS IT IS NOW, and was so created in the beginning. Hugo de Vries aptly said, "Natural selection may explain the survival of the fittest, but it cannot explain the arrival of the fittest." Science has proven that chaos does not naturally and normally turn into order. Life can only come from life (law of biogenesis). Things dont improve naturally as a matter of course (entropy). Things improve because of intelligent input. For example, the technology we enjoy in the present age is a result of human intelligence, not random chance. C++ Programming question? I need some help terminating an array in C++. The program is complete, but the issue I am having is I cannot get the program to terminate if scores[0] = -1. -1 terminates the loop, and if the input is -1 right off the bat the output is... Average is -1.#IND Highest is 1 Lowest is -1. I have not been able to figure out how to just terminate the loop. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Interesting debate: How have the powerplays affected the Duckworth-Lewis calculations? http://confusedofcalcutta.com/2007/04/08/on-powerplays-and-the-duckworth-lewis-method/ I think there is definitely something to this. The change from the 15 over fielding restrictions to the 20 overs of powerplays has affected the way batting teams "pace themselves" through the innings due to the extra five overs of fielding restrictions, meaning in normal circumstances teams will go harder for longer at the beginning of the match before settling down to the accumulation phase of the innings (the middle). This means that, lets say, after 20 overs (assuming all powerplays are taken straight away), the batting team has a higher percentage of the total runs that they are to go on to make in that innings. This has an effect on the "percentage resources" figure that is ultimately used to predict the score and thus come up with the new total. The percentage resources is, in effect, a calculation answering the question 'After x number of overs, and with y number of wickets lost, what what percentage of the runs have scored of what they will score in 20 overs. Very complicated stuff. But this percentage will now change. The fact that the 'optional' powerplays can be taken at any time complicates things even further - depending on when they're taken, the way they're pacing themself will be different and thus the resources figures will not be set in stone like they were under the 15-over fielding restrictions rule. After say 30 overs with 4 wickets down, the tables say the batting side would expect to have scored 46% of the runs they will score in that innings (on average). But depending on when the powerplays are taken, this number would change. I think some amendments will need to be made some point in the future but it can't happen yet because powerplays have only been in operation for three years. The new figures can not be created without thousands of matches (involving the powerplays) worth of data, which will need to be somehow averaged. Thoughts from those of you not bamboozled?

I Need Major Hitting and Mental Help!! My dad is driving me crazyyyy? Alright I have a major problem on my hands! I am 0 for 27 now for the whole year. I am very dissapointed in myself but my dad's attitued sure doesn't help anything. I'm doing my best and I'm the only kid who hasn't gotten a hit. Everygame, even if i play good, my dad comes up with something to yell at me about. I get so mad. So everygame, ik hes watching. When i walk up to the plate, all i think about it is, I better get a hit or my dad is going to kill me. I know your supposed to be thinking swing, swing, swing...no. But I only get 4 balls and 3 strikes. So I don't know what to do. I pray, im religous, i do what I can. About 2 months ago during Fall ball I was on a tear with hitting. I would average a hit a game. I had a couple of doubles, a lot of singles. Now I'm playing club ball. The pitching isn't a whole lot different. Every game my dad finds something to discourage me. I can't say anything to him. He rarely congratulates me any more. I'm sick and tired of it. Now I know the pro's go on 0 of 30 streaks but they play 162 games so they have a lot of time to make it up. I'm not sure how many games I play, I'm guessing around 30 or 40. But we're just going into winter break and we don't have any games then. So now i have to sit her for 3 weeks and think about how horrible i'm doing. My dad and I work on it all the time and I can't figure it out. But the bottom line is, I need a hit. My dad sure isn't helping. But I have to live with it. Does anyone know what the longest batting slump is?? I'm just curious. I'm not as bad of a hitter as my stats show. big name unsigned: cheap owners? i realize that for the past few years, owners, including the yankees got cheaper and cheaper while ticket prices never go down. instead of going after the best available talents, they're trotting out minor league scrubs and journeymen who have no business in the big league. a look at the remaining talent on the free agent market clearly shows that. too often, teams front office overrate defensive metric and overpay for defensive specialists and use "run prevention" and defense as a mean to blackball some of the most dangerous hitters (both average and power) from the game or restrict them to DH duty when they can still play the field. just look at what this strategy did to the mariners last season. it sabotaged their season. why did Carlos Pena get 10 million, Lance Berkman get 8 million to play outfield (position he hasn't played in 5 years) and Ordonez get 10 million yet regular outfielders Manny Ramirez, Vladimir Guerrero, Johnny Damon are unsigned? Berkman's season was a lot worse than Manny and Vlad. Manny hits for average and power and gets on base. How many guys does that other than Pujols? If Jim Thome gets a full-time DH gig, he could lead the league in both home runs and OPS. Few corner outfielders could outslug Jermaine Dye. Russell Branyan is always underappreciated. He could blast 30 homers with his eyes closed and you can even plug him to third or outfield. Jim Edmonds is a beast with tons of power and he could still make high light reel play at centerfield. Gary Sheffield outslugged David Wright in spacious CitiField in 2009 before being forced to sit out last season. He could hit 20 plus homers even as a part time player. Troy Glaus has monster power and could still play third base adequately. He was leading the league in RBIs in June. I would take Andruw Jones's bat over Carlos Pena's any day. What about Jason Giambi? He still has the plate discipline and some pop. He's also an able pinch hitter. Jarrod Washburn had to sit out the year but he was among the league leader in ERA at midseason in 2009 before pitching hurt down the stretch in Detroit. Brad Penny has a job. What about Washburn? Kevin Millwood's record is ugly but keep in mind he was in AL East. Move him back to the NL and you have a comeback of the year candidate. Freddy Garcia might not be the power pitcher he once was, but he's a winner and a crafty veteran who figure out a way to keep his team close even when he's having an off night. Felipe Lopez, only 30 year old, could play both infield and outfield, hit for average, has decent pop. He's better than a lot of starting shortstop/second baseman. Jose Guillen might not have the best plate discipline but he has plenty of pop. You could do worse than sign Miguel Batista as a swingman who could eat some innings and even start in a pinch. With the way starting pitching is, someone should give Aaron Heilman a chance to start before he gets old. Speaking of starting pitching, Jeff Suppan rebuilt his career with the Cardinals and posted a 3.84 ERA post trade. Why doesn't he have at least a long man job? Jeff Weaver was lights out in 2009. His ERA last year was also deceiving. A couple of bad outings late in the season made his number look bad. The fact is he was used too sparingly down the stretch. I like him to start again preferably in the NL. Elmer Dessens had a 2.30 ERA last season. He's not the flashiest guy out there but he's a veteran who knows how to get guys out. He also has starting experience. Pedro Feliz, Cristian Guzman and David Eckstein are both more than capable of filling an utility role. How are they unemployed when Geoff Blum got a multiyear contract? Jay Payton and Fernando Tatis are still decent players who can play multiple positions and u can just invite them to camp. If you're looking for a professional pinch hitter, you could do worse than give Mike Sweeney a shot.

Again i need some book recommendations please read description? Ok im going to put this as plainly as possible by putting down 5 of my favorite books and 5 of my least favorite (that means hate, not it was ok or its fine, HATE so just fyi) and a brief description why. Favorites First by title then by author 1.The Magic of Recluse/L.E.Modesitt,Jr. This story had a great adventure and the fact that the main character was a way above average level type of guys was a real plus with me. The setting as far as a medieval time period was great as well. 2.The Legend of Drizzt Series/R.A.Salvatore This series again has such a great action/adventure with plenty of comical scenes and the main character again had that badass dude type quality it was a real treat. O ya again the medieval time period got a plus from me. 3.Dragon Weather/Lawrence Watt-Evans This book was very similar to the Count of Monte Cristo with a more obviously fantasy edge to it. This story was centered around the main character hardly knowing anything at the beginning to finding a mentor(in this case many mentors) and becoming a brilliant and deadly hand of justice. 4.The Dream Thief/Shana Abe This was a romance novel but i figured i'd through it out there cause it really was a good book. It was about a Human thief and a Drakon(Dragon) Marquess (actually she is the daughter of the Marquess) and this book had a happy ending (what can i say im a sucker for a happy ending).It was again set in a medieval time period.( You may be beginning to notice a pattern here) 5.The Lies of Locke Lamora/Scott Lynch This was about a gentlemen thief and the way his schemes had everyone dancing to his strings like puppets. This was a big hit with me because he showed almost inhuman intelligence with the way he used his plans to get exactly what he wanted. Now for the least favorite. 1.Assassin's Apprentice/Robin Hobb Wow if your thinking about suicide don't read this book, it is extremely depressing throughout the story nothing seems to go this guys way. 2.Shadow bred/Paul S. Kemp This story jumped around way to much for me. i kept trying to figure out who the main character was and just when i thought i knew, it would go of and talk about some character that had nothing to do with what was just going on. So it was hard to focused on anything in the story. 3. The Night Angel Series/Bent Weeks Now this was a little hard to put in this category because i did like the first book and 3/4s of the second but then it got so depressing and the third had the sad ending to it so ya.(Now this has to be the biggest back hand ever because when you get a good book and you really start to like it all the way up to the end and then they hit you with that melodrama sad ending, to me that's like giving me a new plasma screen tv and then hitting it with a baseball bat.) 4.The Magicians Guild/Trudi Canavan Again i liked this ones plot but its main character was a female. Now i know somebody reading this is going to say im a sexist for that but im not, the reason i don't like women main characters is because im a 20 year old guy and i find it hard to connect with the character because i don't know how a women would feel, act, or react in certain situations.(A typical male problem i think so no big deal.) 5.The Legend of Drizzt vol.12/R.A.Salvatore This book had Wulfgar one of the sidekicks in the story as the main character. I don't give a DAMN about Wulfgar's side adventure. If i wanted to read about Wulfgar i would have bought the legend of Wulfgar. So the reason it ended up here was because they switched the main characters, don't do that. Ok so a quick review of what my preference in books are: Main character is bada$$ at everything he does most of the time, No female main characters,Should be an action/adventure or if its really really good a romance(note that if you do put down a romance novel it must be a fantasy Sci-Fi) novel/series,No extremely depressing story's,prefer a happyish ending(Romance must meet this qualification),Medieval time period(can be others i just haven't found any that have the previous preferences as well). Alright, so I've pretty much been single my entire life (minus one two month "relationship" with a gay friend in high school...in reality he just wasn't sure how gay he was and so he lied to me to figure it out for a while). Help me remember the name of this vampire/horror/action book? Normally I don't like vampire books, but this one was actually very intriguing. I don't remember the title or the author, but here's what I do remember: it was an average sized paperback, around 2 inches thick, the cover was red, just a little bit lighter than the color of blood (rofl, I sound like a vampire-junkie), on the cover was this knife. It looked like one of those bejeweled gold crosses the catholic priests carry around on a stick. I don't really remember if anything else was on the cover. Now, the plot was very interesting. The protagonist was female, and I don't remember her name. She does, like in almost all other vampire books, fall in love with a vampire (we'll call him Manly) and Manly turns the chick (Let's call her Chick, I'm terrible with names) into a vampire eventually. But that's where the similarities to all other vampire books I know of end. What you found out was, all of the "catches" to being a "vampire" were all based on the power of suggestion. Everything, including daylight burning the skin, only being able to turn into a bat, all of those restrictions were only there because the catholic church had brainwashed "The Dark Ones" (as they took to calling themselves after discovering all this). The main antagonist was this catholic priest who was really in league with demons. He summoned demons to tear this one guy up (I think he was a cop) in his house, as I remember. Another point in time, he violated an innocent, virgin woman with a wine bottle. He didn't rape her because of his oaths as a priest. This should give you an idea of how foul and twisted this protagonist is. SPOILER ALERT!!!: At the climax, the antagonist shows up in this town square (I think they were somewhere either in Paris or Venice, I don't remember which) and he starts summoning demons left and right. Manly and some of his vampire buddies, including the newest addition to the ranks, Chick, show up to fight off all of these demons. Long story short, the antagonist tries to bring beelzebub across into our dimension, and Manly has to figure out a way to stop his ponderously slow breaking-through of the seperating barrier between our plane of existence and the infernal-plane. During this fight, Chick turned into an eagle or a hawk, taking advantage of her new-found, and unrestricted powers. As you can see, I really remember alot about this book. Mainly, that's because it was such a great book. I tried to give as much information about the plot, characters, and appearance of the book as I could. Possible Rabies Exposure Sparking Worry 2.5 Years Later? Hello, About 2.5 years ago I was moving a colony of Little Brown Myotis bats off the side of the house where they had chosen to roost. In the process I received a small bite from one before he flew off. I thought nothing of it at the time and after reading the average incubation time for Rabies is 30-90 days, I figured I was in the clear. I then recently read somewhere that incubation make take several years and have since been gripped with panic. Does anyone know how likely this is to occur 2.5 years after the initial incident and if these were these single, isolated, atypical cases out of thousands? How Could I Go Pro In Bowling? Okay so I started bowling back in November of 2008. I started with a plastic 12lb Ebonite Galaxie 300. I learned how to throw it straight and practice regularly with it. I fell in love with bowling right off the bat because of how exciting it was to get a strike. So I practiced and practiced and got my high game up to a 201. My average was around the 130 region. Last month I moved up to the intermediate rank and got a finger tipped 15 lb Grand Illusion. I started off really bad and not used to the "hand shake" motion you were supposed to do with it. I have been practicing twice as hard with this ball and got my average up to around the 150-170 region. But tonight my average was around 180 for sure. I bowled a 243 as my high game, and finally figured out how to correctly work my ball on the house oil pattern after a few plays. Practice game to finish was 112, 145, 148, 169, 188, 192, 201, 243. So I was around a 175 average. If i keep this up and keep practicing like I will, how would I go about going Pro, getting on Leagues, any kind of help to get started out trying to make money off bowling. I know it's going to be tough, but I am DESTINED to bowl.

how can i control my aura? i cant see auras, but i can feel the color. its hard to explain, but its like seeing the color with my brain. and its usually more than one color but instead of mixed, it will be something like one colour with streaks or flecks of another. and they have different textures too. some will be like a bubble; clear, light and airy, but when caught by the light has swirls of colour. others will be very dense. some are like sandpaper and others like clouds which are light but envelope you and make it hard to breath. so on and so forth. i've never in my whole life met someone who feels anything like i do. i'm beginning to think there is just something wrong with my brain. like maybe i'm a schizo or something. but then one day there was like a transfer of energy. i get deja vu all the time too. usually they are only a few seconds and i cant see the faces of people in them but i can still see what is gong on. most of the time i have symbolistic visions though. more rarely do i have actual visions like deja vu. anyway, one day i stood up to get a drink and as i got to my door i passed out. it was not from standing up too fast because i had been fine when i stood up and looked in my mirror before going towards my door. my vision type thing started out with me walking in some jungle type forest thing on a wooden path watching two alligators fight with each other. there were snakes all over the place. but one snake in particular caught my attention. it seemed to look at me and want me to follow. so i followed if up the wooden path having to duck underneath enormous spider webs with multiple spiders all sharing the same webs. when i got to the top i was looking over a beach. it looked like it was going to storm soon. i looked around for the snake but it was no where to be found. instead there was a man who's face i could not see. at first he seemed to be an average 17-19 year old male. but then i noticed he had a big cut out on his chest. it was just gone and there was nothing inside. he was hollow except for his heart, just floating there. then he held his arm out towards me, as if offering me something. his fingers moves as if he held his own beating heart. his fingers pulsed rhythmically as he seemed to gesture, or speak without words, no.. its more like he sent his thoughts directly into my head. I dropped out of college because I am having trouble figuring out what I want to do as a career, but I naturally see CVS as a possibility since I already have my foot in the door. Is Learning to surf on a shortboard good if u have some experience? I am about 5ft 10in 120lbs and 17 so im pretty light but i am fit so i was wondering if i could start surfing on a short board or fish/swallow tail board. i know long boards are best and foamies but im more aggressive and have some experience since i........ have skateboarded for real not pose an as well bmx freestyle for real at a skate park and was fairly good, and curently i longboard not water but skate longboard, and at that i am pretty good i slide 180 backside slides 360 and carve or all that good stuff as well as DH well florida hills, and to add to all this i have riddin the flow rider at the adrenalina store which is a indoor surf simulator with water and a fairly big wave or ramp and also jet ski and indo board and im not any pro at these things but a newbie i am not either, but since that i do have balance especially for flow riding and indo and long boarding which flow riding is closest to surfing to me and i can stand up a ride intill i turn and bail but i figured why not learn on a shortboard i do want to get aggresive like longboarding i do the surfing moves like kicking out the tail and sliding and stuff and also know and have the posture for surfing so would it be good to learn on a shortboard not a thruster but something short like a thruster or gun but for small 1ft to 6ft waves btw i am in Floridas gulf coast so the season is near well here no hurricanes yet. Beltran (Mets), Hart (Mil), or Ordonez (Det)? My Startin Outfielders are Soriano (Cubs), Sheffield (Det) and Ordonez (Det, had him in because Beltran was slumpen, and he took off), however lately Ordonez has been struggling and Beltran picked up, so i've been playing Beltran. Is A Rod really a fraud if...? If you assume that A Rod was telling the truth, and he was only on steroids for the three years he was in Texas, then why does this make him a fraud? If you tried to adjust his numbers for those years, it wouldn't make sense to just throw them out completely. His batting average for those years is pretty consistent with his career as a whole, so it would not make sense to claim he would have had a much lower batting average. As for home runs, he did have two of his highest years during this time, but only by about 10 off of his average. So subtract (conservatively) 30 home runs for this period, considering he wouldn't have hit 0 home runs during this time, and he most likely would have had over thirty as indicated by the entirety of his career. Once you do all of this, he's still in rarefied air as far as historical standing goes. Over 500 home runs, and he's 32, that's no piker. All that said, why isn't the story about him, "Man Uses Steroids to Cheat at Baseball, but Obviously Didn't Need Them," as opposed to "Man Cheats at Baseball, His Entire Career is a Fraud"? Why, when the biggest feelgood story in Baseball was Josh Hamilton overcoming a Heroin addiction to reach the top elite, a story about the games greatest figure in the sport having a period of weakness and then doing something very similar to Hamilton, is the most depressing story? Isn't the reaction to steroids a little more emotional than logical?

Which New York baseball team will win more games this season? Last season, they both won 89 games. Obviously, both teams have made significant upgrades. The Yankees got Sabathia, Burnett and Texeira, while the Mets got K-Rod and Putz. However, the Yankees may have lost A-Rod, at least until the All-Star break, so Texeira may only be able to compensate for A-Rod. osing a consistent bat like Bobby Abreu will hurt, but adding Swisher is nice, if he can raise his batting average and they have a starting spot for him. I think the one part of the Yankees roster they've neglected is their bullpen, but they probably figure Joba can move into the set-up role down the stretch if they need him there. It seems like ancient history now, especially because a lineup card glittering with All-Stars is hard to see past, but the bedrock of those four World Series titles in five years at the start of Torre's tenure was strength up the middle and pitching. Take out the contributions of Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada, who both hit .500 against Detroit, and the rest of the batting order went 18-for-104. That's a .173 average. Everybody else in baseball understands your hitters were geeked once they fell behind early and responded by trying to hit every ball out of the park. That's because they figured it was only a matter of time before the other team started doing the same to the Yankee pitchers. Torre, on the other hand, has been consistent, maybe the best thing that ever happened to you. He was the buffer all these years between expectations and reality, and every year he got your team close enough to win it all. He kept everybody happy when dividing playing time among a bunch of midlevel talents like Tino Martinez and Paul O'Neill was touchy, and he kept the spare parts like Jose Vizcaino and Luis Sojo sharp. He made room and time for budding superstars like Alfonso Soriano and Robinson Cano to develop and he usually had all the issues sorted out when the playoffs rolled around. Now he's got a roster full of guys who - at least on paper - should be penciled in every day, and less flexibility than ever to make decisions. He treated them like the professionals they're supposed to be, moving pieces around to account for age and injury, and tried to stay out of their way. Remember how well that worked for the 2000 team, the one that Torre insisted prepared so well on its own that managing was almost too easy? "I'd have meetings sometime," he said then, "for my own sake." Well, this is not that kind of team. No, this is team that could use a big, swift kick in the pants, and Torre isn't so timid that he wouldn't apply the occasional thwack.
