Baseball Hall Of Fame Sandberg Knowledge Base
Baseball Hall of Fame? Why is Ryne Sandberg in the Hall of Fame and Roberto Alomar isn't? I just looked at both of their stats and I am amazed Alomar didn't make it.
Who is the best middle infielder in the Hall of Fame? THe question is mainly centered on Middle infielders in the Baseball Hall of Fame, so that would mean that they are, for a start, retired, and have played at least five years in the majors. What I'm looking for is not offensive production, but defensive. The firld is pretty wide, but I can tell you who has my vote on this one . . . Ryne Sandberg, played for the Chicago cubs from 1981-1997, and played a stretch of 212 straight games without making an error of any kind, that includes fielding, and throwing . . . during that stretsh, Sandberg's glove got the nickname among some of my friends as "The place base hits go to die." Does anyone agree with me on this one?

Why did the writers vote Lou Whitaker off the Hall of Fame ballot after 1 year? In 2001, he received only? 2.9% of the vote (you need at least 5% to remain on the ballot). Sweet Lou had a very good, if not great career as a second basemen for the Tigers for 19 years, 1977-1995. Him and Alan Trammell should be in, in my opinion. But Lou's stats as a second basemen stack up with Hall of Famers Ryne Sandberg and Joe Morgan. This is one of the biggest jokes and travesties ever, that the writers could've made. what do you think? I'm not saying that Whitaker should've been a shoe-in hall of famer, but he should've stayed on the ballot for years and perhaps gotten in, what do you think? here's his stats below. Hall of Fame eligibilityLou Whitaker is currently ineligible for induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame; he did not receive the required five percent of the votes in his first (and only) year of eligibility (in 2001). Despite having statistics comparable to other second basemen in the Hall of Fame (including contemporary Ryne Sandberg, a third-year inductee), Whitaker was dismissed from the ballot after receiving fifteen votes, or 2.9%. This surprised many observers, including Bill James,[3] who named Whitaker the thirteenth-best second baseman of all time in The Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract. Whitaker is now ineligible for baseball's highest honor until 2015 Lou Whitaker Second baseman Born: May 12, 1957 (1957-05-12) (age 54) Brooklyn, New York Batted: Left Threw: Right MLB debut September 9, 1977 for the Detroit Tigers Last MLB appearance October 1, 1995 for the Detroit Tigers Career statistics Batting average .276 Home runs 244 Hits 2,369 Runs batted in 1,084 Teams Detroit Tigers (1977–1995) Career highlights and awards 5× All-Star selection (1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987) World Series champion (1984) 3× Gold Glove Award winner (1983, 1984, 1985) 4× Silver Slugger Award winner (1983, 1984, 1985, 1987) 1978 AL Rookie of the Year
Why is Lou Whitaker not in the Hall of Fame, but his contemporary Ryne Sandberg is? Whitaker played 19? seasons for the Detroit Tigers at second base from 1977-1995. He played in 2,390 games, 8,570 at bats, 1,386 runs, 2,369 hits, 420 doubles, 65 triples, 244 hr's, 1,084 rbi's, 1,197 walks and .276 BA. http://www.baseball-reference.com/w/whitalo01.shtml Sandberg played for the Phillies and Cubs in parts of 16 seasons from 1981-1997. He played in 2,164 games, 8,385 at bats, 1,318 runs, 2,386 hits, 403 doubles, 76 triples, 282 hr's, 1,061 rbi's, 761 walks and .285 BA. Ryne was elected in the HOF in 2005. http://www.baseball-reference.com/s/sandbry01.shtml Lou was a 5 time all-star, WS champ 1984, 3 time gold-glove winner, 4 time silver-slugger winner, and 1978 rookie of the year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lou_Whitaker Ryne was a 10 time all-star, 9 time gold-glove winner, 7 time silver-slugger and the 1984 NL MVP winner. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryne_Sandberg Their hit totals, hr totals, rbi totals and batting averages are almost exactly the same. Ryne had more gold gloves, all star appearances and had one MVP award. Some say that Lou didn't get enough ink because he was quiet with the press, and some say because he is black, he hasn't been elected into the Hall. Do you think Lou will/should make the Hall of Fame one day? The only reason I brought up race is because it is mentioned as a possible reason why Lou isn't in the Hall. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lou_Whitaker#Hall_of_Fame_Eligibility Read that part. I didn't pull this out of thin air. I'm a white guy too, I'm not some black guy playing the race card here.
How is Andre (The Hawk) Dawson not in the Hall of Fame? I just don't get it, his stats were amazing during his 21 seasons from 1976-1996. Dawson played for the Expos, Cubs, Red Sox and Marlins and posted career numbers of: 2,774 hits, 503 Doubles, 98 Triples, 438 HR's, 1,591 RBI's, and .279 BA. He was the NL MVP in 1987 and was a 8 time gold glove winner and 8 time all-star, and NL Rookie of the Year in 1977. Ex-team-mate and HOF'er Ryne Sandberg said during his induction speech in 2005 that, "No player in baseball history worked harder, suffered more or did it better than Andre Dawson," Sandberg said of the rifle-armed outfielder known as "The Hawk." Sandberg continued, "He's the best I've ever seen. I watched him win an MVP for a last-place team in 1987 [with the Cubs], and it was the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen in baseball." Sandberg concluded with, "He did it the right way, the natural way, and he did it in the field and on the bases and in every way, and I hope he will stand up here someday." In 2007, The Hawk got 56.7% of the votes, falling short of the 75%. 2008 looks to be the year that Andre Dawson, Jim Rice and Goose Gossage will finally make it in, because no other noteable players are due to get in next year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andre_Dawson#Hall_of_Fame_Candidacy http://www.baseball-reference.com/d/dawsoan01.shtml
The baseball writers should be ashamed of themselves for not having voted in Andre Dawson into the Hall of? Fame as of 2008. Hopefully in a few weeks, we'll find out if he gets in. I think he won't get in this time around, because Jim Rice will and Rickey Henderson. Dawson's best shot is 2010. If you look at Dawson's career stats, it is a TRAVESTY OF JUSTICE that he is not in the Hall of Fame. Take a look at these career stats. Andre "The Hawk" Dawson was born in 1954. He played in the majors from 1976-1996 in parts of 21 seasons with 4 teams, the Montreal Expos, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and Florida Marlins. In 2,627 games, Dawson had, 9,927 at bats, 1,373 runs scored, 2,774 hits, 503 doubles, 98 triples, 438 hr's, 1,591 rbi's, 314 stolen bases, .279 ba, .323 obp, .482 slugging %. Dawson played right and center field mostly. He had, 8 gold-gloves, 8 time all-star, 4 time silver-slugger, 1987 NL MVP, 1977 Rookie of the Year, and many other awards. Former teammate Ryne Sandberg campaigned for Dawson's induction during his speech at his own Hall of Fame induction ceremony. "No player in baseball history worked harder, suffered more or did it better than Andre Dawson," Sandberg said of the rifle-armed outfielder known as "The Hawk." Sandberg continued, "He's the best I've ever seen. I watched him win an MVP for a last-place team in 1987 [with the Cubs], and it was the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen in baseball." Sandberg concluded, "He did it the right way, the natural way, and he did it in the field and on the bases and in every way, and I hope he will stand up here someday." Well, I hope he gets in, as a kid growing up in the 1980's, Andre was also on the highlight films on ESPN hitting HR's with the Cubs and had a great arm in outfield. Do you think he's a Hall of Famer? Also, I feel he was probably a clean player, meaning no roids, but I have no proof of that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andre_Dawson http://www.baseball-reference.com/d/dawsoan01.shtml
Does Andre Dawson deserve to make the Hall of Fame? Hall of Famer Ryan Sandberg believes he is the best player he has ever played with and has made a case for his induction. The stats speak for themselves but what about the intangibles (MVP for a last place team, wear and tear of playing on turf, hustle and toughness). What do you think? Should Gold Gloves be considered at all in Hall of Fame voting? After all, Rafael Palmeiro won one in 1999 and played only 28 games in the field. Players win them over and over if they have sufficient reputation. Even my beloved Ryne Sandberg probably didn't deserve all the GGs he received, but he was a bigger name than Jose Lind. And there's a story somewhere about when an old coach was asked how his inept fielder could possibly win a GG, the coach said, "With his bat." So, is the award a sham? If so, should it be considered at all in HOF votes? baseball-reference.com Bill James Historical Baseball Abstracts
Why is Kirby Puckett in the Hall of Fame but someone like Don Mattingly isn't? Both had relatively short, ? but productive careers. Puckett played from 1984-1995, but his career was cut short at the age of 34 because of an eye problem. His career stats were, 1,783 games, 7,244 at bats, 1,071 runs scored, 2,304 hits, 414 doubles, 57 triples, 207 hr's, 1,085 rbi's, .318 BA, .360 OBP and .477 Slugging %. He was a 10 time all-star, 6 time gold-glove winner, 6 time silver-slugger, won 2 WS. http://www.baseball-reference.com/p/puckeki01.shtml Don Mattingly played in parts of 14 seasons with the Yankees from 1982-1995, but 1982 really doesn't count because he only had 12 at bats and 2 hits, so he really played 13 seasons. His career numbers are, 1,785 games, 7,003 at bats, 1,007 runs, 2,153 hits, 442 doubles, 20 triples, 222 hr's, 1,099 rbi's, only struck out 444 times, .307 BA, .358 OBP and .471 Slugging %. Mattingly had 9 gold-gloves at first base, 6 time all-star, 3 time silver-slugger, and the 1985 AL MVP. I don't know, if you put Puckett in and Ryne Sandberg, who had a relatively short career, and the Scooter Phil Rizzuto, you have to start to give a better look at guys like Mattingly and perhaps Keith Hernandez. Who thinks Donnie Baseball should be in the Hall? I do. And i'm not even a Yankee fan, I'm a Mariner fan. http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/mattido01.shtml http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Mattingly http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirby_Puckett Chipmaker, why do you always think position matters so much? Also, why do you always think that first basemen always have to be huge sluggers? I'd rather have a guy like Don Mattingly, who gives me great defense, 9 gold gloves, bats .300 for his career, 200 + hr's and 1000 rbi's then a slugger like Richie Sexson who has over 300 hr's, but gives you limited defense. This positional argument that you always make is starting to get a little bit old, don't you think?
Who is it that think Jeff Kent will NOT be in the Hall of Fame? I'd really like to know. Kent: All time leader for 2nd basemen in home runs and RBIs. .290, 377hr 1518 rbi lifetime. 5 time AS, 4 time Silver Slugger, 1 MVP, .276 BA & 9 home runs in post season, 47th all time baseball history in RBIs (and this is a second baseman), 122 HOF monitor in baseball-reference and comparible to Irod, Yogi, Bench, Rice, Sandberg and Fisk as far as HOFers go. Who in their right mind does not think this guy is a HOFer and why? Again, if you're answering tell me why you don't think he won't be in. Just repeating you don't think so is not answering the question.
I have two questions about Cubs! anybody? Q1:Who was the last Cub inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame? a. Ernie Banks b. Bill Buckner c. Ryne Sandberg d. Greg Maddux e. George W. Bush Q2:When was the last time the Cubs played in the World Series? a. 1984 b. 1908 c. 1945 d. 2003 e. 11 B.C.
Cubs/Baseball fans, Are you upset about Quade being the manager? In my opinion Sandberg should have gotten hired. He's been with the Cubs organization since he was a player, Hall of fame even! Now he's with the Phillies organization because the Cubs pretty much told him he's not experienced enough, even though he's been coaching in the minors forever. And Quade was a base coach, how does this work?
