Who is one baseball player you would pay to see? Past or present. For me though I'm a Sox fan it's Joe DiMaggio. Everything I've heard/read says DiMaggio was a player you really had to see to understand his greatness. Everything talks of how gracefully he played center and how smooth he was as a player. The stats really don't show he was as great as everyone saids. Mainly it's people who saw him. I'd wanna see for myself
Did Shoeless Joe bet on baseball and throw games? I'm interested in his case, because his stats were out of this world. He was definitly in the same leaque as Mays, Williams, DiMaggio, Hornsby, if not better. Shame he didn't play longer.
Here is my list of the greatest hitters of all time. Do you agree? Who did I forget and who doesn't belong? There are so many I had to pick 25. It was fun trying to think of them without stats in front of me. Active players not included. Here are my top 25 somewhat in chronological order: Rogers Hornsby Honus Wagner Ty Cobb Josh Gibson Babe Ruth Roy Campenalla San Musial Ted Williams Joe Dimaggio Earny Banks Roberto Clemente Frank Robinson Mickey Mantle Willy Mays Harmon Killebrew Hank Aaron Carl Yaz Joe Morgan Rod Carew Pete Rose George Brett Eddie Murray Tony Gwynn Mike Schmitt Kirby Puckett I assure you I didn't copy from anything and I am not counting current players because the verdict isn't in on them and who knows who did or didn't use steroids? I have read your suggestions and thought further. Additions: Al Kaline, Duke Snider, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Jackie Robinson, Robin Yount, Wade Boggs, Carlton Fisk, Tris Speaker, Jimmy Fox, Hank Greenburg, and Lou Gherig. Considered but borderline: Cal JR, Paul Molitor, Don Mattingly, Jim Rice, Yogi Berra, (forgot name of Expos Slugger from the 80's), Brooks Robinson, Mel Ott, Steve Garvey, Hank Greenberg, Johnny Bench, Orlando Cepada, Rhine Sanberg

Baseball stars of past eras would only be average against talent of today.. agree or disagree anyone? I understand they have bulky stats. I understand they were great for their era. I do not agree they would have those stats or would be considered great if playing against todays players. If you take a slightly above average pitcher of today (example: Tim Hudson) and you insert him into the same years that Cy Young pitched, I believe the pitching award would be called the Tim Hudson Award. Same with hitting. Take a good power/avg. hitter of today like an Albert Pujols and you insert him into the Early 1900's era and he would have batted over .600 every year with a lifetime of 1200 home runs. The pitchers of past eras would not have been able to get him out. I am just fed up with the all-time lists being only past era player with little to no respect for current talent. The "GREAT" Willie Mays or Joe Dimaggio simply were not as good as todays era "MEDIOCRE" Jim Edmonds. Anyone else agree that Willie's "great" catch wasn't anything that spectacular?
A-Rod. Why so critical? Why shouldn't he make the HOF? Can i get a full reason from you as to why (or why not) you are so critical about A Rod. I'll put my argument forward to begin. First of all - he is an awesome athlete. He was putting up insane numbers before he took steroids, and is currently delivery the same numbers after the use of performance enhancing drugs. Its like saying that if i (some random) take steroids I'm going to hit 50hr a season and knock in 150rbi's. He did this stuff without the steroids, and you still need an insane amount of talent to do it with steroids. He had a 40/40 season without steroids. Secondly - A-Rod is facing pitcher's that have taken steroids, getting hits robbed by outfeilders that have taken steroids, and getting thrown out by catchers that have taken steroids. An even playing field has been set out (personal opinion). 3rd point - There was no rule at the time in MLB stating that steroids mustn't be used. He hasn't cheated. If you're offered a 10m start in the 100m dash, and it was in no way breaking the rules, would you take it? I would. If i were in the midst of the fastest men on earth, and i could run the 100m dash in 10 flat already, I'd practically be turning down thousands of dollars, and the credit of being the fastest man on earth. 4th - A-Rod is a human being if some of you haven't realised. The world shouldn't be at his throat about this. If you haven't notice, people do things for a reason. This guy has been put under so much pressure (if you haven't noticed). No one knows what it's like to be in his shoes, so don't criticize him till you have. Last point - There is absolutely no point in comparing Ted Williams, Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio for any of this crap (HOF related). For starters, its useless comparing different generations of baseball players. You're never going to see another Babe Ruth, but you're definitely going to see people that are just as good as he was (personal opinion). If he faced pitchers of today's generation he would be in the same pool as everyone else. Personal opinion - I think A-rod would be better than him. Look at their bodies. Does Babe Ruth look like a professional athlete. Hell no. Repeating myself, but A-rod is facing pitchers that use steroids, so his stats should lower due to that shouldn't they? A-rod has had 2 MVP seasons since using steroids, was a number 1 draft pick prior to using steroids and my guess is he was on his way to the hall of fame anyway. His stats didn't improve when he used steroids. All opinions welcome Thanks

Is Mauer a legitimate MVP candidate? Joe Mauer's stats are incredible for this late in the season (batting .383 with 25 homeruns and 77 RBI's). In fact, only four American league players have ever been over .380 with 25 or more homeruns this late in a season. Their names are Ruth, DiMaggio, Gherig, and Williams (not bad company if you ask me). Would you consider Mauer a legitimate MVP candidate even though he is likely playing for a non-playoff team? If you had a vote, would you choose Mauer as the AL MVP? If Mauer is not your choice for AL MVP, who is your choice and why?
